The discussion begins at 5:30pm.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, Haase \u2013 professor in Austin Peay\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apsu.edu\/biology\/\" >Department of Biology<\/a> \u2013 taught <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apsu.edu\/news\/july-2021-science-in-movies-0701.php\" >an honors-level class that investigated the science portrayed in blockbuster Hollywood movies<\/a>. Students used critical thinking to analyze how the science in the movies stacked up to real science.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The April 5th Science on Tap will give attendees the same opportunity with \u201cMoneyball,\u201d based on Michael Lewis\u2019s nonfiction account of the Oakland Athletics\u2019 magical 2002 season. Athletics\u2019 General Manager Billy Beane used sabermetrics to help find undervalued talent to build the team.<\/p>\n<p>Haase will start the presentation by talking about the impetus for the honors class she taught \u2013 \u201cbeing critical about what we see on the big screen\u201d \u2013 before introducing Jones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBaseball and statistics have always belonged together,\u201d Jones wrote in a summary of the lecture. \u201cSince the advent of the box score through the application of modern data analysis techniques (sabermetrics), fans have used statistics to value players and predict outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSabermetrics has evolved to improve player value estimation and performance prediction over previous methods,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe will discuss the accuracy of movie scenes and basic sabermetrics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Science on Tap meets at 5:30pm on the first Tuesday of every month during the academic year, bringing together two great things: science and local brews.<\/p>\n<p>[470center]<\/p>\n<p>Science on Tap will finish the school year with a third installment exploring science in the movies. Dr. B.
