(APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>An army of volunteers moved across campus, planting trees, shrubs and flowers to replace what the tornado had taken. The effort back then was called Operation Restoration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat tornado is why campus looks the way it does now, and has such diversity in its tree population,\u201d Wes Powell, APSU assistant director of landscape and grounds, said.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one years later, a crisis of a different sort has hit campus, but volunteers still found a way to plant the campus red last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a socially distant Plant the Campus Red,\u201d Powell said.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-four volunteers \u2013 students, faculty, staff and Montgomery County Master Gardeners \u2013 planted nearly 3,600 plants over four days, he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_489892\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Volunteers-at-Austin-Peay-State-University-use-social-distancing-to-\u2018Plant-the-Campus-Red\u2019-2.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-489892\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-489892\" title=\"Thirty-four volunteers planted nearly 3,600 plants at Austin Peay State University over four days. (APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was really nice to allow people to get out of their house or dorm rooms and do something normal again,\u201d Powell said.<\/p>\n<p>Plant the Campus Red has happened every spring at Austin Peay State University since the 1999 tornado.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an all-inclusive volunteer event where faculty, staff, students and the community with the Montgomery County Master Gardeners all have a chance to volunteer together,\u201d Powell said. \u201cThat\u2019s one of my favorite parts about it.
