Like a good meal, it\u2019s complex, savory and a transitory state between empty and full \u2026 the state of modern existence.<\/p>\n<p>Shanley also will lead public masterclasses and workshops February 10th-14th on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Shanley is a graduate of New York University and a member of the Ensemble Studio Theatre. He received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and the Writers Guild of America Award for best screenplay written for the screen for his 1987 film \u201cMoonstruck.\u201d Shanley directed his script of1990\u2019s \u201cJoe Versus the Volcano\u201d starring Tom Hanks and wrote two songs for it.<\/p>\n<p>In 1995 he wrote the screenplay for the film \u201cCongo.\u201d In 2005 Shanley\u2019s play \u201cDoubt: A Parable\u201d awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama, and the Drama Desk and Tony awards for best play. He wrote and directed the film version of \u201cDoubt\u201d in 2008 starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. The film was nominated for five Oscars and many other film industry awards. Shanley is the author of more than 23 plays.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_467001\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Freddie-Ashley.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-467001\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-467001\" title=\"Freddie Ashley\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Freddie-Ashley-480x322.jpg\" alt=\"Freddie Ashley\" width=\"480\" height=\"322\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-467001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freddie Ashley<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The world premiere plays will be directed by Freddie Ashley, artistic director of Actor\u2019s Express in Atlanta. He has directed over 40 Actor\u2019s Express productions and is a multiple Suzi Bass Award winner (best play&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u201cAngels in America,\u201d \u201cThe Crucible\u201d; best musical&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u201cRent\u201d; best director&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u201cRent,\u201d \u201cAngels in America,\u201d \u201cGrey Gardens\u201d; best actor&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u201cThe Whale\u201d). Other directing work includes Aurora Theatre, Dad\u2019s Garage, Jewish Theatre of the South and Atlanta Lyric Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>New play development work includes Playwrights\u2019 Center, Kennedy Center, Alliance Theatre (recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award), Page 73 and the New Group, working with playwrights such as Joshua Harmon, Lindsey Ferrentino, Michael Lew and Marco Ramirez. He has received the Elliot Hayes Award for Dramaturgy from the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Medallion of Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]Ashley is vice president of the National New Play Network. He is on faculty at Kennesaw State University and Georgia State University, and he holds a Master of Fina Arts from the University of Southern Mississippi.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive Savory Dishes\u201d is produced by the Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre &amp; Dance as part of the 2019-20 Acuff season, which also features a Drama Desk-nominated director\/choreographer, a Jeff-nominated actor and the U.S.\u2019s top flying effects company for the spring musical \u201cThe Addams Family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre and Dance is excited to host these guests on campus!
