\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – Two Austin Peay State University (APSU) teams recently competed in a regional speed-programming competition, and one team finished first place at its site and 24th<\/sup> overall. <\/p>\n

Team \u201cScarlet Double\u201d finished first of 16 teams at the University of Tennessee at Martin, and that finish was good enough to rank the team 24th<\/sup> overall of 126 teams competing in the Association of Computing Machinery\u2019s International Collegiate Programming Contest Mid-Central USA region. <\/p>\n

That means team members Lexie Nance, David Rau and Travis Dozier finished the most problems in the shortest amount of time than the other 15 teams at UT Martin and 102 teams in the regional competition. The team\u2019s members won Arduino robotics kits for winning their site.<\/p>\n

Austin Peay State University\u2019s other team, \u201cCode Canvas,\u201d placed 10th<\/sup> at the UT Martin site and 85th<\/sup> overall. The team members were Rae Campbell, Alex Carrizo and Wesley Stephanak.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur students have trained all semester for this competition,\u201d said the teams\u2019 coach, Dr. James Church, associate professor of computer science and information technology. \u201cTheir win demonstrates all of their hard work. These students will become tomorrow\u2019s developers for their ability to engineer solutions quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The International Collegiate Programming Contest is a real-time online competition that takes place over five hours at colleges across the country. The Mid-Central contest includes colleges from Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Three-person teams try to solve as many programming problems as they can as quickly as they can. This year\u2019s contest offered 12 problems, and the problems ramped up in difficulty quickly. All the problems were hard. Teams generally don\u2019t attempt all the problems. <\/p>\n

[320left]The teams are ranked by how many problems they solve. If teams solve the same number of problems, the team who solved its faster ranks higher. <\/p>\n

Team Scarlet Double attempted four problems and solved three. They solved Problem No. 1 in six minutes, Problem No. 9 in 23 minutes and Problem No. 12 in 50 minutes.<\/p>\n

The second-place team from Rhodes College solved the same problems but needed 42 more minutes to do so. Several other teams \u2013 including teams from UT Martin, Murray State and the University of Memphis \u2013 solved the same problems but in much longer times.<\/p>\n

Team Scarlet Double finished just behind a Vanderbilt team in the overall competition, solving the same problems but four minutes slower. Teams from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne dominated the competition, placing five teams in the Top 10. One of those teams solved all 12 problems and finished first overall.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe competition simulates an entire semester\u2019s worth of homework in an advanced algorithms course,\u201d Church said.<\/p>\n
