(APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the tactics you learn in ROTC or at Fort Campbell is pretty much useless in the jungle.\u201d Bertoni, a senior history major, said. \u201cYou can\u2019t even see the guy in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bertoni is the first Austin Peay cadet to attend the Army\u2019s 20-day survival program.<\/p>\n<p>In the years following 9\/11, the U.S. Army moved its focus away from jungle warfare training, but according to the Associated Press, that changed in 2013 when the Army set up shop at Hawaii\u2019s Schofield Barracks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The First Week: \u2018It destroys you\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>During the first week this summer, Bertoni quickly learned jungle survival skills, such as how to create rope bridges for crossing treacherous rivers. He also completed a 5k run with a dummy rifle, full uniform and 10-15 pounds of gear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt destroys you,\u201d Bertoni said. \u201cYou\u2019re just exhausted by the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other exercises included:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cadets in full gear sinking to the bottom of a pool, stripping off the gear and returning to the surface.<\/li>\n<li>Cadets trying to complete a 15-meter dive without dropping their rifles.<\/li>\n<li>Cadets in full gear trying to tread water for 10 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a cadet fails an exercise, they get another chance. If they fail again, they go home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost five or six people that way,\u201d Bertoni said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bertoni had his own struggles to overcome that first week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI failed the one-rope bridge,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the carabiners flipped upside down.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how technical they were. (APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During week two, Bertoni learned how a squad moved in the jungle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s classes on moving through the jungle,\u201d he said. \u201cMoving through the jungle as a platoon is nearly impossible. You can\u2019t move like that (in the wedge formation he was used to) through that dense vegetation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the exercises were \u201cmovement to contact,\u201d he said. \u201cThe commander would say, \u2018go from here to here and on the way, you\u2019re going to get shot at by four guys and then you\u2019re going to react to contact using one of the methods we taught you in class.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when we really saw how chaotic the jungle was,\u201d Bertoni said.<\/p>\n<p>[320right]Bertoni and his team survived in the jungle for over 36 hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found raw ginger and cut it up and tried to eat it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s like a super dry carrot. It doesn\u2019t taste very good. It\u2019s definitely not ginger cookie.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bertoni decided to be the first Austin Peay cadet to attend the school because \u201cit was something I didn\u2019t really know about. I tried to find as much information about it as I could, and I really couldn\u2019t find a lot. I wanted to broaden what I know and what this school could teach me that I could use later in life.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bertoni said his experience with prior service members at Austin Peay and Fort Campbell was invaluable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey just have all this knowledge,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can tell a difference immediately between cadets and someone who\u2019s enlisted. We all have our \u2026 I don\u2019t want to say innocence \u2026 we just don\u2019t know what we\u2019re doing. We\u2019re naive. So being able to work with a bunch of prior service guys was really easy for me.
