\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – Blood is desperately needed at Hospitals across Tennessee. Last week, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee called on the state\u2019s residents to help end the blood bank shortage, and even the American Cancer Society is pleading for people to donate because, according to that organization, \u201cblood transfusions save millions of lives in the United States every year.\u201d<\/p>\n

A blood drive will take place at Austin Peay State University September 23rd-24th. (APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The American Cancer Society is speaking out because, for cancer patients in particular, these transfusions help replace vital red blood cells and platelets.<\/p>\n

To combat this shortage, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) will host a special, two-day American Red Cross blood drive to benefit the region, from 10:00am-4:00pm, September 23rd, and 11:00am-5:00pm, September 24th, in the APSU Foy Fitness and Recreation Center.<\/p>\n

Instructor Donna Dey organized the event after discovering how the current blood shortage affected her colleagues. Earlier this year, Tonya Leszczak, Austin Peay State University assistant director of alumni relations, was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. During a critical time in her treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, a team of doctors told her there\u2019d be a short delay in her care.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctor said, \u2018We have a blood shortage, so you\u2019re not going to do the procedure today,\u2019\u201d Tim Leszczak, APSU professor of HHP and Tonya\u2019s husband, said. \u201cThey told us we\u2019d have to wait until they received a delivery later that day. That\u2019s when we realized there was a blood shortage. We saw it firsthand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dey and her HHP colleagues are encouraging individuals both at Austin Peay State University and in the greater Clarksville community to give blood during the two-day drive. The process will take about an hour, but donors will restore critically low blood supplies.<\/p>\n

Some individuals, for a variety of reasons, are unable to donate blood, but Dey said that shouldn\u2019t stop them from supporting this important event.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need volunteers to help us that day, so even if they can\u2019t donate blood, they can donate their time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The APSU Foy Fitness and Recreation Center is located at 451 Marion Street in Clarksville.<\/p>\n
