\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – Austin Peay State University (APSU) history professor Dr. Somaditya Banerjee has been nominated for an international achievement award for the second time this year.<\/p>\n

Banerjee traveled to London, England, in May to accept the Mahatma Gandhi Leadership Award, presented by the Non-Resident Indian Welfare Society of India. (APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n

If he\u2019s selected, he\u2019ll travel to the Global Friendship Banquet on October 5th in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to receive the Glory of India Award, which recognizes resident and nonresident Indians who have displayed \u201cextraordinary excellence in different fields of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Past winners of the award include Mother Teresa, former India Vice President B.D. Jatti and famed Hindi actor Dev Anand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conference will be attended by the elite of Indian economy and polity and the (Nonresident Indians, aka NRIs) from many countries,\u201d according to Banerjee\u2019s nomination letter from banquet organizer India International Friendship Society. \u201cIt will especially project achievements of Indian diaspora, which has made Mother India proud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Presentation of the Glory of India awards is the finale of the conference.<\/p>\n

Gandhi Leadership Award In Loundon<\/h3>\n

Banerjee traveled to London, England, in May to accept the Mahatma Gandhi Leadership Award, presented by the Non-Resident Indian Welfare Society of India.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe non-resident Indians, at least a majority of them, are connected to India by traveling, by investment, by their families,\u201d Banerjee, who grew up in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India, and moved to the United States in 2002, said after winning that award.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have basically carved out a space for India in the international world. The identity of India in the international world is more prominent through the lens of NRIs than it was before,\u201d stated Banerjee.<\/p>\n

Banerjee received his award on the banks of the River Thames from Preet Gill, a member of Parliament of the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

[320right]Banerjee is assistant professor in the APSU Department of History and Philosophy, but he started his academic career in physics, earning a bachelor\u2019s in physics from St. Xavier\u2019s College in Kolkata, India; a master\u2019s in physics from the University of Pune in India; a second master\u2019s in physics from the University of Arkansas; a third master\u2019s, in history of science and technology, from the University of Minnesota; and a doctorate in history from the University of British Columbia.<\/p>\n

Banerjee joined the Austin Peay Department of History and Philosophy in 2017.<\/p>\n
