Getting an opportunity to study an ancient Roman villa excited her classics side and learning more about ground-penetrating radar techniques piqued her physics side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d never really considered archaeology as something I wanted to do until I started thinking about combining my classics and my physics together,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of stuff that\u2019s art or art history and archaeology that\u2019s classics-focused but also make use of my more science-minded skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Adding Classics To A Science Mind<\/h3>\n<p>Seage started at Austin Peay as a physics major but picked up studying classics her sophomore year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_451206\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Austin-Peay-State-University-student-Jane-Seage-2.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-451206\" class=\"wp-image-451206\" title=\"The research opportunity gives APSU Student Jane Seage a chance to use her odd pairing of majors. (APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe classics make a lot of sense to me, it\u2019s like solving a puzzle,\u201d she said. \u201cTaking all the different parts and putting them together makes a lot of sense to me. Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece is so cool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were to ask me my favorite person now, I\u2019d say Julius Caesar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seage is considering studying archaeology in graduate school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m interested in archaeology because I love classics, it\u2019s a foreign language, the puzzle-solving aspect, but at a certain point, you\u2019re just reading literature, and when you\u2019re reading literature, you write essays about literature, which is not super-exciting for me, so I think archaeology provides a different perspective that is more concrete,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m attracted to the lab aspect of archaeology, but there is a lot of field experience, actually going out to a dig, like what I\u2019ll be doing this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Grants Help Get Her to Romania<\/h3>\n<p>Seage is able to go to Romania because of a College of Arts and Letters research grant and a honors study abroad scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting the grant was a huge relief since the deadline for the trip\u2019s fees were coming up and this was my only way to really pay for it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>[320right]She also received help from classics professors and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree people emailed me about it, and they were like, \u2018Jane, this has physics and classics, you have to check it out,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018Yeah, that sound like exactly what I want to do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Personal relationships like that have enhanced Seage\u2019s experience at Austin Peay State University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve definitely learned more about myself,\u201d Seage said. \u201cAustin Peay has provided a lot of opportunities for me that I might not have gotten at a bigger school.
