It was his second straight second-place finish in the annual competition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_448468\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/APSU-student-Alexander-Kee.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-448468\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-448468\" title=\"Austin Peay State Univerity student Alexander Kee\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/APSU-student-Alexander-Kee-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State Univerity student Alexander Kee\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-448468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Austin Peay State Univerity student Alexander Kee<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Maurine Dallas Watkins Sight Translation Contests, hosted by the Eta Sigma Phi Honorary Society for Classical Studies, draw only the most advanced undergraduate classics students from across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Kee took the test earlier this semester and found out about his finish on March 27th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was excited,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know, it\u2019s three hours of good work. You get $75.00 for second place, and that\u2019s more than I normally make in three hours of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the competition challenges competitors to translate Greek or Latin to English. Kee competed in the Advanced Prose Composition contest, which challenges competitors to translate English to Latin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s different than what you\u2019re going to get in most of your upper-level classes,\u201d Kee said. \u201cWhat this requires is a different understanding of the language, it\u2019s a different kind of skill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, Kee had to translate an excerpt of Queen Elizabeth I\u2019s famous 1588 speech to her troops at Tilbury, where England repelled the Spanish Armada. The Rossview High School graduate will attend the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, as a master\u2019s candidate in teaching Latin.
