Clarksville, TN<\/strong> – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.<\/p>\nSome of the events in March at the Museum are: Twentieth Anniversary of the Tornado, Mike Andrews: A New Vision, First Responders, 15 Over 50: A Women\u2019s History Month Exhibition, Create a Sculpture out of Soap, Meet the Artist: Marilyn Murphy.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n H.N. James: The Urban Goddesses<\/strong> Tennessee portrait photographer, H.N. James exhibits a series of work interpreting figures from mythology. The artist states of her work \u201cWe live in a time when old ways of viewing women are being challenged and I am pleased to be a part of that conversation as a living woman artist.\u201d<\/p>\n Bold Strokes: The Art of Sandy Spain<\/strong> This Nashville artist working in acrylics is known for her strong color palette. Ms. Spain has works in private collections throughout the United States, Switzerland, Norway, Canada, Austria, and Germany.<\/p>\n Lynn Garwood: My View<\/strong> My View features a Wisconsin artist who paints everyday objects. In 2009, Lynn Garwood closed down her sign painting business to concentrate on being an artist. Lynn\u2019s paint of choice is acrylics. Under every painting, she paints a positive word. These words can be seen and at other times are completely painted over to be hidden.<\/p>\n Twentieth Anniversary of the Tornado<\/strong> This retrospective showcases artifacts and local stories related to Clarksville\u2019s 1999 Tornado. The exhibition is sponsored in part by Legends Bank.<\/p>\n Mike Andrews: A New Vision<\/strong> A local teacher & sculptor working in wood and limestone brings his new pieces to the Crouch Gallery. Included in the show are Andrew\u2019s figurative pieces, abstract benches, and wall-mounted forms.<\/p>\n [320right]First Responders<\/strong> First Responders includes artifacts and photographs from the Museum\u2019s Collections related to Clarksville\u2019s emergency responders, including the 1925 fire engine that was used by the Clarksville Fire Department. This exhibition is sponsored in part by Clarksville Dental Center.<\/p>\n 15 Over 50: A Women\u2019s History Month Exhibition<\/strong> This exhibition features 15 contemporary women artists from across the country all over age 50. Works include photography, painting, and sculpture done in a variety of styles.<\/p>\n Friday Mornings in April: Firefighters to the Rescue!<\/strong> Have you seen the real 1925 fire engine in The First Responders Exhibit? Take a look, and then head on over to Explorers\u2019 Landing for some hands-on fun. Make a Fire Engine craft out of different shapes. Explore a \u201cfire\u201d sensory bin; will you be able to \u201crescue\u201d the animals and trees and houses within the bin?<\/p>\n Hands-on Activities: Create a Sculpture out of Soap<\/strong> Through May 5th, the Museum is displaying wood and limestone sculptures in an exhibit called \u201cMike Andrews: A New Vision.\u201d Now, YOU can create a sculpture too, in this fun and interactive drop-in program.<\/p>\n Using a bar of Ivory Soap, pottery tools, simple tools found around the house, and your own imagination you can turn a bar of Ivory Soap into your own \u201cmasterpiece!\u201d Use one of the simple templates we provide, or create your own design!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [320center]<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Meet the Artist: Marilyn Murphy<\/strong> The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center is open with free admission all day. Join us from 10:30am-12:00pm to meet the artist featured in our 15 over Fifty exhibition. Marilyn Murphy is a Professor of Art at Vanderbilt University.<\/p>\n Her work has been shown in more than 300 exhibitions nationally and abroad. She will discuss her approach to building a still life image and ways to use colored pencils, chalk, and graphite.<\/p>\n Sunday Family Fun Learning Day: Pok\u00e9mon Invasion<\/strong> Kyle Pajala\u2019s interest in Pok\u00e9mon began while watching the cartoon with his son in 2010. Since that time he has captured hundreds of these fascinating little beings that continue to multiply. Kyle loves to show and talk about his large collection and is always on the lookout for his next capture. He is looking forward to meeting kids and adults who share his fascination.<\/p>\n While in the Family Art Studio use some toilet paper tubes to create your own unique \u201cPok\u00e9mon-like\u201d creatures.<\/p>\n All ages are invited to share in the fun!<\/p>\n Art 4 Us: Free Art Workshops for High School & College Students<\/strong> The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center will offer free art classes to high school and college students during the month of April.<\/p>\n [320left]A painting and a sculpting class for college students will be held from 5:00pm\u20137:00pm on Thursday, April 4th. Students may sign up for either class. The painting and sculpting classes for high school students will be held from 2:00pm\u20134:00pm on Sunday, April 7th.<\/p>\n The drawing and multi-media classes for college students will be held from 5:00pm\u20137:00pm on April 25th. The drawing and multi-media classes for high school students will be held from 2:00pm\u20134:00pm on April 28th.<\/p>\n All those who wish to attend must register at the museum at least one week before the date of the class or classes they would like to attend. A parent or guardian must register for anyone younger than 18 years old.<\/p>\n These classes are made possible through a generous Arts Engagement in American Communities grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
