{"id":26995,"date":"2019-03-13T11:00:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T16:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=26995"},"modified":"2019-03-13T08:42:29","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T13:42:29","slug":"apsus-eriksson-college-of-education-welcomes-delegation-of-chinese-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2019\/03\/13\/apsus-eriksson-college-of-education-welcomes-delegation-of-chinese-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"APSU\u2019s Eriksson College of Education welcomes delegation of Chinese teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Austin Peay State University (APSU)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; For nearly 90 years, Austin Peay State University (APSU) has provided professional development training for local teachers, but in late February, the Eriksson College of Education expanded its services well beyond the Middle Tennessee region.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, February 20th, 2019 a delegation of 15 preschool and kindergarten teachers and administrators from Beijing, China, arrived on campus for a special, week-long training symposium.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_446647\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/APSU\u2019s-Eriksson-College-of-Education-welcomes-delegation-of-Chinese-teachers.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-446647\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-446647\" title=\"Chinese teachers delegation visits Austin Peay State University.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/APSU\u2019s-Eriksson-College-of-Education-welcomes-delegation-of-Chinese-teachers-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese teachers delegation visits Austin Peay State University.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-446647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chinese teachers delegation visits Austin Peay State University.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey showed us a lot of concepts of education in America,\u201d Hong Yang, a principal at China\u2019s Oriental Dragon International Preschool and Kindergarten, said. \u201cWe had no idea about American education, but later we plan to suggest to our kindergarten parents to let their kids study here in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yang said the American style of teaching was \u201ctotally different from the Chinese,\u201d and she was impressed by the different teaching strategies and activities, \u201cespecially in the STEM professional development. It was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During their visit, the teachers received training in early childhood and in science instruction at Austin Peay\u2019s state-of-the-art Jack Hunt STEM Center. Dr. Bing Xiao and Dr. Philip Short, APSU assistant professors of education, led several intensive professional development sessions for the group.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese teachers also visited different types of American schools, including Amare Montessori on Warfield Drive, the Little Govs Child Learning Center on campus, and Barkers Mill Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe principal at Barkers Mill, Mrs. (Rhonda) Kennedy, was so gracious, giving us a tour of the school, and letting the teachers attend a grade-level planning meeting,\u201d Dr. Benita Bruster, chair of the APSU Department of Teaching and Learning, said. \u201cThey let us attend the entire meeting. Our guests learned about assessments, and they got to listen and ask questions, and participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the last year, Bruster and Ji Ma, APSU graduate teaching assistant, have worked to develop strategic relationships between APSU\u2019s Eriksson College of Education and schools in China.
