(APSU)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>The student newspaper staff earned the following awards:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shania Green<\/strong>: Ranked 1st for Best Editorial Artist\/Illustrator<\/li>\n<li><strong>Valerie Linares<\/strong>: Ranked 3rd for Best Press Photographer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Noah Houck<\/strong>: Ranked 4th for Best Newspaper Layout Designer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Benjamin Little<\/strong>: Ranked 6th for Best Press Photographer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Juno Von Palko<\/strong>: Ranked 10th for Best Arts &amp; Entertainment Writer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Best of the South Awards had 442 entries from 31 schools across the southeast. Green, a junior graphic design major and senior graphic designer, earned the top spot for a second year in a row for her illustrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never would have had the honor of receiving this award if it hadn&#8217;t been for the All State staff,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Green\u2019s submitted illustrations included an editorial cartoon on Generation Z, mental health and the Serena Williams tennis controversy. In the fall, Green earned the national Associated Collegiate Press Individual Awards second place for Cartoon of the Year for Editorial Cartoon and fifth place for Design of the Year for Illustration.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The All State\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KiSS3zNUHMc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Linares, a junior communication major and senior staff photographer, said, \u201cI am beyond speechless and grateful to have been recognized for my hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her submitted work for Best Press Photographer included images from the spring drag show, 100 Black Men and Women in Suits campus walk and children from the Little Govs Child Learning Center\u2019s annual Easter Egg Hunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing on staff has taken me out of my bubble and allowed me to explore what my strengths are as a photographer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Houck, a senior communication major and managing editor and sports editor, earned his ranking in Best Newspaper Layout Designer for sports pages he designed during the year.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]\u201cI could not have done this without the help of my mentors from <em>The All State<\/em>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Houck previously earned recognition from the Tennessee AP Broadcasters &amp; Media Editors College Awards a second place for Online Sports Reporting and his staff earned a first place for Online Sports Coverage\/Program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to have had this opportunity these past few years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Little, senior Health and Human Performance major and former staff photographer, said, \u201cWork done for <em>The All State<\/em> is submitted for awards without hesitation. The awards received by <em>The All State<\/em> staff is testimony to the production quality of our work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His submitted work for Best Press Photographer included University Recreation aerial fitness, the men\u2019s basketball Ohio Valley Conference appearance and the Student Government Association\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecognition pushes the staff to strive for next level work,\u201d Little said. \u201cBeing ranked in the top ten of the SEJC shows that all of the hard work was worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Von Palko, a junior communication major and assistant features editor, said, \u201cI am incredibly honored and delighted to receive this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her submissions for Best Arts &amp; Entertainment Writer were movie reviews on \u201cLove, Simon,\u201d \u201cHalloween\u201d and \u201cSeven Seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing how far my passion for both writing and entertainment has taken me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students and staff from APSU attending SEJC from <em>The All State<\/em> were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Patrick Armstrong<\/strong>, coordinator of Student Publications and Marketing and adviser to <em>The All State<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kamea Ferguson<\/strong>, junior communication major and perspectives editor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Noah Houck<\/strong>, senior communication major and managing and sports editor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Joann Morales<\/strong>, junior communication major and photo editor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jordan Potenza<\/strong>, junior English major and features editor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amanda Tackett<\/strong>, sophomore nursing major and perspectives writer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maisie Williams<\/strong>, freshman communication major and news editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students attending SEJC attended various sessions lead by local industry professionals on writing, visual storytelling, investigative reporting, data journalism and career tips.<\/p>\n<p>They also heard a keynote from Phil Williams, investigative reporter for News Channel 5, on the impact local journalism can have on the community.<\/p>\n<p>[320right]Editor-in-Chief Ashley Thompson said she has pride in the staff and all the work they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe put a lot of time into the newspaper, website and social media; and it is always exciting to see staff receive awards, showing what hard work can achieve,\u201d she said. \u201cI want <em>The All State<\/em> to be a place where people learn and grow as journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The All State<\/em> student newspaper publishes each Wednesday in print, and is distributed on APSU\u2019s Clarksville and Fort Campbell campuses.
