Austin Peay State University (APSU)<\/h2>\n

\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – On Saturday, November 17th, 2018 during the Austin Peay State University (APSU) Military Appreciation Football Game, the University officially dedicated a POW-MIA chair in the stadium.<\/p>\n

As excitement continues to build around Austin Peay\u2019s football program and fans fill the stands at Fortera Stadium, one seat near the American flag will always remain empty.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, November 17th, 2018 during the Austin Peay State University Military Appreciation Football Game, the University officially dedicated a POW-MIA chair in Fortera Stadium.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody can sit in it,\u201d Brenden Smith, an APSU chemistry major, said. \u201cThat chair is to symbolize all the people who didn\u2019t come home.\u201d<\/p>\n

For more than two years, members of APSU\u2019s Sigma Chi fraternity raised money for the memorial.<\/p>\n

Several sports venues around the country have installed similar chairs, and when Smith, former president of Sigma Chi, saw one at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, he knew he wanted one at Austin Peay.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy family is very big in the military, and I\u2019m just one of the fortunate kids where my parents came home,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m really grateful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chair and sign are in Section G of Austin Peay State University’s Fortera Stadium.<\/p><\/div>\n

Smith\u2019s parents and stepparents served in the military, as do two of his brothers and his uncle.<\/p>\n

His grandfather fought in Vietnam and his great-grandfather served in World War II.<\/p>\n

[320left]\u201cI want to give thanks to the men and women who didn\u2019t get to come home because they\u2019re a part of something we can\u2019t forget,\u201d he said. \u201cYou may not be in the military, but the families that make sacrifices have influenced your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s fraternity and the fraternity\u2019s alumni chapter helped collect money for the project, raising more than $1,400 for the chair and a special plaque.<\/p>\n

Now, no matter how large of a crowd attends an Austin Peay football game, this chair in Section G will remain empty to remind fans of the sacrifices made over the years by servicemen and -women.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
