Austin Peay State University&#8217;s anonymous donor.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met Ms. Jane a while later, and she is amazing,\u201d Sarrah Goudreau (\u201914), a former APSU nursing student, said. \u201cI was a nontraditional student with two kids. I have no family here. It was rough. For somebody to say, \u2018Here you go.\u2019 I can\u2019t even explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goudreau wept in the Advancement Office that day, five years ago, when she received a scholarship, endowed by Ms. Jane, that provides single parents with $3,000 to earn a degree.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2017, this anonymous donor passed away, and the University community learned the real name of its mysterious benefactor \u2014 Evelyn Jane McCampbell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think about what she did anonymously, when I look at the magnitude of what she\u2019s done for Austin Peay, I want everyone to know about her generosity and selflessness,\u201d Laurie Vinson, McCampbell\u2019s friend and financial adviser, said.<\/p>\n<h3>The real &#8220;Ms. Jane&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Evelyn Jane McCampbell was born June 4th, 1931, in Jackson, Tennessee, and after an impressive high school career \u2014 she was on the National Honor Society \u2014 she enrolled at Lipscomb University. A few years later, she headed south to Memphis to study at the University of Tennessee Nursing School. That\u2019s where she met Dr. Frank G. McCampbell Jr., her husband and partner for 40 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_438975\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/APSU-donorEvelyn-McCampbell-1.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-438975\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-438975\" title=\"The late Evelyn McCampbell (&quot;Ms. Jane&quot;).\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/APSU-donorEvelyn-McCampbell-1-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"The late Evelyn McCampbell (&quot;Ms. Jane&quot;).\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-438975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The late Evelyn McCampbell (&#8220;Ms. Jane&#8221;).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Frank, an obstetrician, set up a small practice in Clarksville, with his wife as chief nurse and, after she earned a business administration degree from Union University, manager of the medical office.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the couple helped deliver hundreds of children in Clarksville-Montgomery County, but the McCampbells never had any children of their own. Instead, they invested in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe offered advice, compassion and support to many community women during those years,\u201d the Signature HealthCARE Hall of Fame entry on Ms. Jane states. \u201cEvelyn became a longtime member of the University of Tennessee Extension\u2019s Home Demonstration Club to help rural women learn to store food and other effective ways to provide for their families suffering from poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[320left]When Frank passed away, leaving his wife with a large estate, she developed an estate plan to continue helping young people in the area. That\u2019s when Evelyn McCampbell became Austin Peay\u2019s Ms. Jane. She initially established a nursing scholarship and a special education scholarship, but she wanted to do more.<\/p>\n<p>Through the Community Foundation, she developed the McCampbell Helping Hands Fund, with Austin Peay as a major benefactor. Because of her, a substantial check is sent to the University every year to fund scholarships for multiple individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was most beneficial in helping me achieve my goal in completing my degree,\u201d Ciara Buxton, a special education major and scholarship recipient, said. \u201cI received a partner in my education. Each year, she looked forward to meeting students at Austin Peay\u2019s Annual Scholarship Dinner. She shared their excitement for the future, and she later confided to Vinson that these scholarships were the one thing she was most proud of in her life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the scholarship, I wouldn\u2019t be able to afford to finish school,\u201d Shamika Moss, nursing student and scholarship recipient, said. \u201cThree children and divorced.
