If you\u2019re going to make a bold statement, you\u2019d better be able to back it up. On Wednesday morning, during the Alignment of Community and Education Industry Summit, hosted by Austin Peay State University\u2019s College of STEM, he told a packed audience of local business, civic and educational leaders that Clarksville-Montgomery County is the best place in all of Tennessee to live, work, play and thrive. In his words, it\u2019s \u201cideal.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_435073\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/APSU-Industry-Summit-inspires-local-leaders-to-envision-the-future-3.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-435073\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-435073\" title=\"Austin Peay State University President Alisa White and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan talk before the summit.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/APSU-Industry-Summit-inspires-local-leaders-to-envision-the-future-3-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University President Alisa White and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan talk before the summit.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-435073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Austin Peay State University President Alisa White and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan talk before the summit.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it was not the ideal location, I don\u2019t think we could say we\u2019ve got the quality stable household names in our industry court,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think they would have chosen our location if they didn\u2019t feel like this was a great place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the last few years, several major companies, such as Google, LG Electronics and Hankook Tire, have invested in this \u201cideal\u201d community, but executives with both new and existing employers argue that the area, with its educational and military resources, still has much more to offer. A recent labor analysis even called for the community to \u201cincrease communication and collaboration between industry, educators and the military.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That challenge was issued in 2017, and Austin Peay State University\u2019s College of STEM quickly set to work organizing Wednesday\u2019s summit.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_435074\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/APSU-Industry-Summit-inspires-local-leaders-to-envision-the-future-1.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-435074\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-435074\" title=\"Tennessee State Representative Jay Reedy attends the APSU summit.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/APSU-Industry-Summit-inspires-local-leaders-to-envision-the-future-1-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee State Representative Jay Reedy attends the APSU summit.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-435074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tennessee State Representative Jay Reedy attends the APSU summit.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis summit is about reaching out to initiate the conversation of how to better align regional educational programs with the needs of regional industry,\u201d Dr. Karen Meisch, interim dean of the College of STEM, said.<\/p>\n<h3>Educational Opportunities<\/h3>\n<p>On October 3rd, Dr. Alisa White, APSU president, welcomed a diverse group of community partners to campus to help foster these stronger relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, Nashville State Community College and Hopkinsville Community College were also there to offer their support.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]\u201cWe\u2019re committed to educating our students so they have strong critical thinking, quantitative reasoning and communication skills to allow them to join the workforce, and the hope is that they would start adding value day one,\u201d White said. \u201cWe can add degrees to meet changing industry requirements, but we need to stay connected to you all, to regional employers and stakeholders to know what they really need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millard House, director of the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, said his staff is committed to meeting with industry representatives to help meet their needs, and his team isn\u2019t afraid to think outside of the box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI vow to innovate,\u201d he said. \u201cThat means that if a particular industry or company wants us to come in and start a small school, we\u2019ll sit down and have that conversation. We are open to innovation, we are open to possibilities that are good for children and good for industry as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A talent war<\/h3>\n<p>Before he bragged about Clarksville-Montgomery County, Tate addressed what he sees as a major challenge for employers \u2013 hiring and keeping skilled workers.<\/p>\n<p>With the unemployment rate at a record low of 3.2 percent, it\u2019s often a challenge for companies to keep workers from moving to a new job offering just a little more money or an extra day off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_435075\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/APSU-Industry-Summit-inspires-local-leaders-to-envision-the-future-2.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-435075\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-435075\" title=\"Dr. Rex Gandy, APSU provost, promotes the University during the summit.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/APSU-Industry-Summit-inspires-local-leaders-to-envision-the-future-2-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Rex Gandy, APSU provost, promotes the University during the summit.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-435075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Rex Gandy, APSU provost, promotes the University during the summit.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHiring has become, in my opinion, a stressful task for HR managers,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018Hire\u2019 is a four-letter word in some cases.\u201d He added later that, with so many successful companies in the area, \u201cWe\u2019re in the middle of a talent war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to maintain a quality place, we\u2019ve got to provide an atmosphere where folks want to live here, play here, grow here and continue to raise their families here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Horton, with Workforce Essentials, offered a solution to the talent war, telling employers to \u201ctake a chance\u201d on men and women transitioning out of the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe No. 2 largest employer in the state of Tennessee is Fort Campbell,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is a talent pool where you have 6,000 soldiers leaving a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Keep the conversation going<\/h3>\n<p>[320right]Wednesday\u2019s summit ended at 10:00am, but several individuals stayed to continue discussing how to take advantage of the region\u2019s many resources. A consensus emerged that the community needs to host more events like the Austin Peay State University summit to keep the conversation going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all here for the same reason, and that\u2019s that we want to provide solutions to our workforce issues that are facing our community and really position ourselves ahead of our peer communities when it comes to providing a sustainable workforce,\u201d Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no reason why we can\u2019t do better,\u201d Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan said. \u201cIn fact, there\u2019s every reason for us to roll up our sleeves and capitalize on the energy and expertise we have right here in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Austin Peay State University (APSU) Clarksville, TN &#8211; Frank Tate, executive director of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Industrial Development Board, knows how to brag.
