Clarksville, TN<\/strong> – Austin Peay State University student Jordan Miller\u2019s research project this summer might change the way you see the road.<\/p>\nOr, more specifically, it might change the way your car sees the road.<\/p>\n

The Austin Peay computer science senior and White House High School graduate is one of 11 undergraduate students from across the country who ventured to Florida to work with professors at Florida Atlantic University\u2019s Institute of Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering.<\/p>\n
Miller was selected for the paid, nine-week program to work with Dr. Jinwoo Jang, an assistant professor in FAU\u2019s Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering.<\/p>\n
<\/a>APSU senior Jordan Miller shows her program to Florida Atlantic University mentor Dr. Jinwoo Jang during her summer undergraduate research project. Miller researched a self-driving car program to help identify and report missing or incomplete lanes on roads.<\/p><\/div>\n
Their project: Program equipment on self-driving cars to \u201csee\u201d deficiencies in road markings \u2013 gaps in the white and yellow lines on the pavement \u2013 and report those problems so local government can fix any problems.<\/p>\n
As Miller points out, self-driving cars need road markings to stay on the road (and to perform other basic driving maneuvers).<\/p>\n
[320left]\u201cIf the markings aren\u2019t on the road, they can\u2019t function,\u201d she said. \u201c(Road markings) might not be a big problem now, but once all the cars on the road get to be self-driving, the lanes are going to be super important.\u201d<\/p>\n
Miller thinks her research is unique: \u201cNobody is working on whether something needs to be repainted or not. People are working on the classifying (cars seeing road markings).\u201d<\/p>\n
Her research will be more important as cars become smarter and cities become more connected.<\/p>\n
<\/a>Miller, with Jang, at the entrance of Florida Atlantic University, where the Austin Peay senior spent nine weeks during the summer doing undergraduate research. She was one of 11 undergraduates from across the country chosen for the program.<\/p><\/div>\n
Miller wrapped up her time at FAU in early August, but her research continues.<\/p>\n
[320right]\u201cThe experience was amazing, and I got to learn a lot about life as a graduate student,\u201d she said. \u201cI ended up implementing an \u2018almost real-time\u2019 solution where a webcam placed on the dash of a car takes videos in one-minute intervals and feeds them into the lane-detection algorithm.<\/p>\n
\u201cFuture work will be to implement a real-time solution with a neural network and the GPS which tells the local government where the line does not exist.\u201d<\/p>\n
Miller attributes her recent success to Dr. John A. Nicholson, associate professor in Austin Peay\u2019s Department of Computer Science and Information Technology. He persuaded her to apply for the FAU program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n
