{"id":25957,"date":"2018-06-13T14:00:09","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T19:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=25957"},"modified":"2018-06-13T12:46:49","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T17:46:49","slug":"apsu-college-of-education-looks-at-china-for-potential-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2018\/06\/13\/apsu-college-of-education-looks-at-china-for-potential-students\/","title":{"rendered":"APSU College of Education looks at China for potential students"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Austin Peay State University<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Benita Bruster\u2019s cell phone pings all day with messages from WeChat\u2014a popular Chinese social media app.<\/p>\n<p>The Austin Peay State University professor and chair of the APSU Department of Teaching and Learning within the Eriksson College of Education downloaded the app earlier this summer, while on a recruiting trip to China, and now whenever she picks up her phone, she learns of another potential international student eager to study at APSU.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_426201\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-1.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-426201\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-426201\" title=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-1-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-426201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cChinese students want to come to the United States and have an international experience,\u201d she said. \u201cSo in the spring, a plan was formed with department faculty and graduate assistants from China, to organize a recruiting trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s Center for Extended and International Education decided APSU\u2019s Eriksson College of Education might appeal to students in that area, so in late May Bruster went on a 10-day recruiting trip through northeastern China. During her travels, she visited three universities and initiated potential 3-plus-2 partnerships with these institutions.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-2.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-426202\" title=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-2-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the 3-plus-2 partnerships, these students would finish three years of their education in China,\u201d she said. \u201cThen they would come here their senior year and stay at Austin Peay as graduate students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruster presented a lecture to more than 300 faculty members and students on literacy and language acquisition at Baotou Teacher\u2019s College and Jining Normal University. Several students from both colleges are planning to enroll at APSU in the coming year, and Bruster\u2019s trip might also bring some of the world\u2019s top athletes to campus next year.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-3.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-426203\" title=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-3-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went to Beijing Sport University (BSU), where China sends a lot of their national athletes and trains Olympic athletes from all over the country,\u201d she said. \u201cRight now, there\u2019s a proposed partnership with Austin Peay and BSU to send these students to study Health and Human Performance at Austin Peay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[320left]Since 2015, the University has moved aggressively forward in targeting international students. APSU\u2019s international student recruiters have visited Mexico, Morocco, India, the United Kingdom and Vietnam, and they\u2019ve worked on similar partnerships with universities in Taiwan, China, Japan and South America.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the recruiting trip, Bruster visited the Beijing Bokai Zhineng Quan\u2019na Kindergarten, and that school is now planning to send four teachers to APSU this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn China, there\u2019s an initiative for Chinese children to learn English,\u201d she said. \u201cThe director wants to send his teachers here for graduate degrees in early childhood education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-4.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-426204\" title=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/APSU-professor-Dr.-Benita-Bruster-recruiting-trip-to-China-4-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"APSU professor Dr. Benita Bruster recruiting trip to China.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bruster developed the recruiting trip with help from two of her colleagues, Dr. Ling Wang and Dr. Bing Xiao, and a graduate student, Ma Ji, who are all originally from China. Her husband, APSU computer science instructor Barry Bruster, accompanied her on the trip, and he was able to promote international opportunities to potential graduate students with APSU\u2019s Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.
