\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – The Vietnam War\u2014America\u2019s first \u201crock and roll war,\u201d as it came to be known\u2014had a distinct soundtrack that continues to help define it.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Ken Burns\u2019 2017 documentary, \u201cThe Vietnam War,\u201d featured music by Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, and why The Rolling Stones\u2019 hit, \u201cPaint It Black,\u201d shows up in Stanley Kubrick\u2019s film \u201cFull Metal Jacket.\u201d Even Forest Gump marched through rain and muck to the sounds of Buffalo Springfield.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Steve Sullivan, an Austin Peay State University history major and music lover, decided to examine the war through the music of the late sixties and early seventies.<\/p>\n

Last month, his research, \u201cImportant Notes: How Music Shaped the Vietnam War,\u201d won first place in the undergraduate paper category at the Regional Phi Alpha Theta Meeting at Morehead State University in Kentucky. Phi Alpha Theta is a national history honor society, and the APSU chapter, Theta Delta, has earned national \u201cChapter of the Year,\u201d recognition for nine years in a row.<\/p>\n

Several club members, accompanied by APSU faculty, traveled more than four hours in late March to attend the event, and as always, the University\u2019s history honor society put on a good showing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a fantastic conference,\u201d Dr. Minoa Uffelman, professor of history, said. \u201cWe won three of the six best paper prizes.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Sullivan, APSU graduate student Zacharie Kinslow earned second place in the graduate student category for his paper, \u201cCradle of Revolution: The North Carolina Back Country and the Birth of Revolutionary Sentiments.\u201d Graduate student Beth Bisciglia\u2019s paper, \u201cPhotography as Impetus of Change: How Photojournalism during the American Civil War Revolutionized Medicine, Faith and Sexual Norms,\u201d won third place in the same category.<\/p>\n

Three APSU students also presented their research at the conference. Cierra Pegram, an undergraduate, presented \u201cThe Societal Shift in Gender Roles: Women of Classical and Hellenistic Greece.\u201d Graduate student Keith Chezem presented \u201cThe Pentagon Papers and the Fall of Richard Nixon,\u201d and graduate student Jennifer Holland presented \u201cTurning High School on Its Head: Flipping Secondary Social Studies Classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uffelman, Dr. Kelly Houston Jones, assistant professor of history, and APSU student Nicholas Herrud also attended the event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
