{"id":25599,"date":"2018-03-25T16:00:10","date_gmt":"2018-03-25T21:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=25599"},"modified":"2018-03-25T15:21:03","modified_gmt":"2018-03-25T20:21:03","slug":"apsu-hosting-free-screening-discussion-of-immigration-documentary-welcome-to-shelbyville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2018\/03\/25\/apsu-hosting-free-screening-discussion-of-immigration-documentary-welcome-to-shelbyville\/","title":{"rendered":"APSU hosting free screening, discussion of immigration documentary \u201cWelcome to Shelbyville\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The town of Shelbyville is about two hours south of Austin Peay State University, and most Clarksville residents only make the journey to visit family or friends or, along with thousands of others from around the world, to watch the grand spectacle known as the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration each summer.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2009, this small, rural community became a focal point for the nation\u2019s ongoing immigration debate.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_415929\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Welcome-to-Shelbyville.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-415929\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-415929\" title=\"Immigration documentary \u201cWelcome to Shelbyville\u201d to be shown at Austin Peay on April 12th.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Welcome-to-Shelbyville-480x270.jpg\" alt=\"Immigration documentary \u201cWelcome to Shelbyville\u201d to be shown at Austin Peay on April 12th.\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-415929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Immigration documentary \u201cWelcome to Shelbyville\u201d to be shown at Austin Peay on April 12th.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That year, PBS aired a new documentary, \u201cWelcome to Shelbyville,\u201d which presented a town where, according to the channel\u2019s website, \u201clongtime African American and white residents are challenged with how best to integrate with a growing Latino population and the more recent arrival of hundreds of Muslim Somali refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 4:00pm on Thursday, April 12th, 2018 Austin Peay will host a special screening of the film in room 103BC of the Morgan University Center, and the community is invited to participate in this event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s free and open to all, including the wider Clarksville community, and we welcome people to join in on post-screening discussions on immigration and refugee issues,\u201d Dr. Neeta Bhasin, APSU assistant professor of languages and literature, said.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary is the final movie in this spring\u2019s \u201cCrossing Borders Film Series,\u201d which paired immigration-themed movies with presentations by APSU faculty members. The series was developed as part of Bhasin\u2019s service-learning course, \u201cExploring Immigrant Experiences and Narratives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this class, students study the history of immigration and explore immigrant experiences in the U.S., while also serving local and regional community organizations that support immigrants and refugees. In addition to coordinating the film series, students visited immigrant communities in Georgia, and they are working with Tennessee immigrant and refugee rights organizations in Nashville.<\/p>\n<p>The APSU Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement works with faculty to develop service-learning courses each semester.
