{"id":25566,"date":"2018-03-10T09:00:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-10T15:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=25566"},"modified":"2018-03-10T01:11:01","modified_gmt":"2018-03-10T07:11:01","slug":"poet-essayist-immigration-advocate-marcelo-castillo-to-speak-at-apsus-asanbe-diversity-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2018\/03\/10\/poet-essayist-immigration-advocate-marcelo-castillo-to-speak-at-apsus-asanbe-diversity-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Poet, essayist &#038; immigration advocate Marcelo Castillo to speak at APSU\u2019s Asanbe Diversity Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; In 2016, during an interview for the literary journal Ploughshares, award-winning poet and essayist Marcelo Hernandez Castillo said, \u201cI wish I wasn\u2019t afraid, I wish this wasn\u2019t my reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Castillo was five, his family moved from Mexico to California, and even though he now has permanent resident status, he told Ploughshares, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m not still afraid, either for myself or for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_414731\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Marcelo-Hernandez-Castillo.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-414731\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-414731\" title=\"Marcelo Hernandez Castillo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Marcelo-Hernandez-Castillo-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Marcelo Hernandez Castillo\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-414731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marcelo Hernandez Castillo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In addition to being a rising literary star, Castillo is one of the nation\u2019s leading immigration advocates, and at 1:00pm on Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 he\u2019ll visit Austin Peay State University\u2019s Trahern Theatre to deliver the keynote talk, \u201cUndocumented and Unafraid,\u201d at the 2018 Asanbe Diversity Symposium.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:30pm, he\u2019ll also participate in a panel discussion, \u201cMemory and Immigration in the Political Moment,\u201d in the Trahern Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium, sponsored and organized by the APSU Department of Languages and Literature, was established 23 years ago in memory of Dr. Joseph Asanbe, the first professor of African and African-American literature at APSU. The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs, the African-American Studies Program, the International Studies Program, the Latin American Studies Program, the Women\u2019s and Gender Studies Program, the Hispanic Cultural Center, the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and Glover\u2019s Lock Service.<\/p>\n<p>Years after his family moved to California, Castillo became the first undocumented student to graduate from the prestigious Helen Zell Writers Program at the University of Michigan. He is a founding member of the Undocupoets campaign, which successfully eliminated citizenship requirements from all major first poetry book prizes in the country. Through a literary partnership with Amazon Publishing, he helped establish The Undocupoet Fellowship, which provides funding to help curb the cost of submissions to journals and contests.<\/p>\n<p>A graduate of the Canto Mundo Latinx Poetry fellowship, Castillo has also received fellowships to attend the Vermont Studio Center and the Squaw Valley Writers Workshop. He is the author of \u201cCenzontle,\u201d which won the 2017 A. Poulin, Jr. prize and will be published by BOA editions in 2018. His first chapbook, \u201cDULCE,\u201d earned the Drinking Gourd Poetry Prize and will be published by Northwestern University press in the fall of 2018. His memoir, \u201cChildren of the Land\u201d is forthcoming from Harper Collins.<\/p>\n<p>The Asanbe Diversity Symposium is free and open to the public.
