{"id":25503,"date":"2018-02-23T16:00:57","date_gmt":"2018-02-23T22:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=25503"},"modified":"2018-02-23T12:54:49","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T18:54:49","slug":"the-all-state-staff-earns-10-awards-at-southeast-journalism-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2018\/02\/23\/the-all-state-staff-earns-10-awards-at-southeast-journalism-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"The All State staff earns 10 awards at Southeast Journalism Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-378741\" title=\"Austin Peay State University student newspaper &quot;The All State&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/The-All-State-480x160.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University student newspaper &quot;The All State&quot;\" width=\"240\" height=\"80\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The All State, student newspaper at Austin Peay State University, earned two first place awards in Best News Editorial Artist\/Illustrator and On-site Op-ed Writing and eight additional awards from the annual Southeast Journalism Conference during on Friday, February 16th, 2018.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_413455\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/The-All-State-staff-earns-10-awards-at-southeast-journalism-conference.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-413455\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-413455\" title=\"The All State staff show their 10 awards from the the annual Southeast Journalism Conference.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/The-All-State-staff-earns-10-awards-at-southeast-journalism-conference-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"The All State staff show their 10 awards from the the annual Southeast Journalism Conference.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-413455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The All State staff show their 10 awards from the the annual Southeast Journalism Conference.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The conference was hosted at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>There were 412 entries from 30 colleges and universities across the southeast in this year\u2019s Best of the South competition.<\/p>\n<p>The On-Site competition had 170 entries across 15 categories.<\/p>\n<h3>The All State earned the following awards:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ranked 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best News-Editorial Artist\/Illustrator<\/strong><br \/>\nShania Green, sophomore and senior graphic designer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;for On-site Op-Ed Writing<\/strong><br \/>\nAaliyah Mitchell, senior and managing\/perspectives editor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best Newspaper Page Layout Designer<\/strong><br \/>\nGlavine Day, alumna and former sports editor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best Press Photographer&nbsp;<\/strong><br \/>\nBenjamin Little, junior and staff photographer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;for On-site Arts &amp; Entertainment Writing<\/strong><br \/>\nAndrew Wadovick, senior and features editor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 4<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best News Graphic Designer&nbsp;<\/strong><br \/>\nLewis West, senior and former graphic designer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best College Magazine<\/strong><br \/>\nThe All State, 2016 Summer Edition<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best Feature Writer<\/strong><br \/>\nAshley Thompson, sophomore and senior staff writer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best Press Photographer<\/strong><br \/>\nJeffery Hooper, junior and former staff photographer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranked 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;for Best Press Photographer<\/strong><br \/>\nBryan Smith, senior and staff photographer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Green\u2019s entries for the news-editorial artist\/illustrator category included illustrations of the total solar eclipse over APSU, President Donald Trump as a Twitter-like bird and a gun control graphic in response to the Las Vegas shooting. She placed first out of 13 entries.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper page layouts Day entered depicted former Men\u2019s Head Basketball Coach Dave Loos earning his 500<sup>th<\/sup>win, and when his retirement was announced and a replacement was named. Day placed second out of 19 entries. She was previously recognized at the national level in the fall with three Honorable Mentions from the Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Association for her layouts. Day currently works for the Robertson County Connection as a sports reporter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final images are usually enough of a reward, but to have my work recognized at a larger level feeds the passion that I have for photography,\u201d Little said. The images he submitted were from a #MeToo student protest, and a Govs football and soccer game.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]Out of seven entries, West placed fourth for his news graphics on Coach Loos\u2019 500<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;win, hidden voices of sexual assault and the media\u2019s response to President Trump\u2019s treatment toward the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson\u2019s stories covered a wide-range in the features writer category, including how bees react to a total solar eclipse, an alumna presenting her life story and a history professor exploring cultures of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith so many competitors, I didn&#8217;t think I&#8217;d place at all,\u201d she said. \u201cWinning this award was really exciting and a new experience for me. I love working for The All State and have learned a lot up to now.\u201d Thompson placed fifth out of 30 entries.<\/p>\n<p>She also said this experience has helped her writing grow and improve for next year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also makes me feel like I really helped show what working for The All State is all about and show my higher ups I care about what I&#8217;m learning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hooper\u2019s submissions for press photographer were all from the Gov\u2019s historic-winning football season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe All State allowed me the opportunity to harness my skills in a variety of environments, along with furthering my work ethic and ideas for my career,\u201d he said. Hooper has interned with the Nashville Film Institute, and is currently working full-time as a photographer for Lifetouch Studios.<\/p>\n<p>Smith submitted photographs from a transgender student-support rally and service dogs offering emotional support during finals week. Out of 28 entries, three photographers from The All State earned third, fifth and eighth, respectively. This was also the most entries a school could enter in the same category.<\/p>\n<h3>Students attending the conference from The All State were:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Miya Haney, freshmen and staff photographer<\/li>\n<li>Noah Houck, junior and sports editor<\/li>\n<li>Aaliyah Mitchell, senior and managing\/perspectives editor<\/li>\n<li>Ashley Thompson, sophomore and senior staff writer<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Wadovick, senior and features editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Earlier this year,&nbsp;The All State&nbsp;earned eight national awards at the 2017 Fall National College Media Convention, including four from the Associated Collegiate Press and four from the College Media Association. The SEJC wins increase their total to 18 awards for the 2017-18 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so proud of the staff for receiving these 10 awards,\u201d Celeste Malone, editor-in-chief, said. \u201cThe All State has continuously raised the bar and has maintained a reputable force in college media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper, housed in the Office of Student Publications in the division of Student Affairs, publishes each Wednesday in print, and distributed on APSU\u2019s Clarksville and Fort Campbell campuses.
