\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – The Austin Peay State University Music Department will present baritone Cory Schantz in a Guest Artist Recital on Thursday, February 8th, 2018 at 7:30pm in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall.<\/p>\n

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will include songs and arias by Mozart, Korngold and Ibert, as well as a new song cycle, \u201cSongs of Experience,\u201d by American composer, Daren Hagen. He will conclude the program with well-known selections from \u201cThe Man of La Mancha.\u201d<\/p>\n

An alumnus of Austin Peay, Schantz received his Master of Music in vocal performance from the University in 1996.<\/p>\n

Described by reviewers as \u201ca versatile baritone and captivating performer with a wide dramatic and comedic range,\u201d Schantz has appeared in numerous roles with the Atlanta Opera, including Count Ceprano in its triumphant production of \u201cRigoletto.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was recognized as an \u201cengaging presence on stage\u201d by the Baltimore Sun following his professional debut as Wagner in Gounod\u2019s \u201cFaust\u201d at Baltimore Opera, a role he reprised with the Atlanta Opera, where critics called the role \u201chandsomely sung.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schantz has performed across the United States, including returning to Atlanta in the role of Fiorello in Rossini\u2019s \u201cIl Barbiere di Siviglia,\u201d as well as debuting with the Rimrock Opera in Billings, Montana in 2014 as Giorgio Germont in Verdi\u2019s \u201cLa Traviata.\u201d Schantz appeared in the Tulsa Opera\u2019s stirring production of Jake Heggie\u2019s \u201cDead Man Walking,\u201d a performance hailed by critics as the finest production by the company in a decade.<\/p>\n

He has also performed principal roles with the Wichita Grand Opera, the Springfield Regional Opera, the Union Avenue Opera and the Winter Opera of St. Louis. His 2017 schedule included the role of Sharpless in the First Coast Opera production of \u201cMadama Butterfly,\u201d and the title role in Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s \u201cThe Mikado\u201d with Atlanta\u2019s Capitol City Opera. He will make his Opera Birmingham debut in 2018, singing the role of Capulet in Gounod\u2019s \u201cRom\u00e9o et Juliette.\u201d<\/p>\n

An active recitalist and interpreter of oratorio, he has appeared as baritone soloist in Handel\u2019s \u201cMessiah\u201d with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Enid Symphony Orchestra, the Billings Messiah Festival and the Brazos Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared in recital and presented masterclasses at numerous colleges and universities, including the University of Connecticut, the University of Tennessee, Elon University, the University of South Alabama and the University of New Hampshire.<\/p>\n

Schantz made his New York debut in December 2015 with the New York Repertory Singers in the world premiere of \u201cWinter\u2019s Light,\u201d a song cycle for soprano, baritone, chamber chorus and orchestra by Michael John Trotta. He has also performed as soloist with a number of regional symphony orchestras, most recently the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n

Schantz studied with Marilyn Horne at the University of Oklahoma and the Acad\u00e9mie Musicale de Villecroze in France. Currently, he is director of opera and assistant professor of voice at Reinhardt University in Waleska, Georgia.<\/p>\n
