\"TheClarksville, TN<\/strong> – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.<\/p>\n

Some of the events in December at the Museum are: The Art of the 2Rivers Society of Painters, Tamara Reynolds: Southern Route, Veiled Abstractions: L.A. Bachman, Toys from the Museum Collection, Doggerels: The Illustrations of Edward Gilman, and Noel Night.<\/p>\n

Tom Rice: Endurance in Form<\/strong>

Tom Rice<\/p><\/div>\n

This exhibition is a retrospective of Tom Rice\u2019s long career as a sculptor, and features works done in stone, wood, and ceramic. Tom\u2019s work has been recognized internationally. His sculptures can be found in private and permanent collections such as Tennessee State Museum, the White House in D.C., Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Austin Peay State University, Cheekwood Museum of Art, Clarksville Public Library, the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center, and the Nashville Airport.<\/p>\n

The Art of the 2Rivers Society of Painters<\/strong>

The 2Rivers Society of Painters is a group of eight artists from Clarksville, Tennessee who work together in their quest for quality art. \u201cWe are diverse, energetic and thoughtful in our art and message to others. Each has a different voice that, in the end, becomes harmonious in the language of art.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tamara Reynolds: Southern Route<\/strong>

[320right]Photographer Tamara Reynolds was born and currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she has worked for 25 years as a commercial and editorial photographer for magazines and advertising agencies focusing on portraiture and lifestyle imagery.<\/p>\n

Reynolds says about her Southern Route series: \u201cThis project is about resolving my conflicted feelings I\u2018ve experienced as a Southerner. I love the South, but I have sometimes been embarrassed to claim it as my home. I chose to explore the South on back roads and across railroad tracks. In so doing, I found I could appreciate my home despite its failings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Veiled Abstractions: L.A. Bachman<\/strong>

L.A. Bachman<\/p><\/div>\n

Nashville artist L.A. Bachman\u2019s abstract art explores family, belief, responsibility, failure, and desire, and is an arena for self-reflection. Hints of human form are veiled by an abstract layer like lace across the body, suggesting tangible objects amidst unrecognizable ones.<\/p>\n

Helping Around the House: Toys from the Museum Collection<\/strong>

Doggerels: The Illustrations of Edward Gilman<\/strong>

Doggerels by Edward Gilman<\/p><\/div>\n

Edward R. Gilman was a World War I U.S. Navy artist, painting ships while stationed at Charlestown Harbor in Boston. He moved to New York to work as an illustrator. His lithograph printing included such clients as United Fruit, Betty Crocker, and Coca-Cola. Doggerels is brought to the Museum courtesy of Jane and Gerry Gilman.<\/p>\n

Rachel Bush: Humor is No Laughing Matter<\/strong>

Rachel Bush<\/p><\/div>\n

Rachel Bush is currently an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. In this presentation, Rachel will be talking about using humor in graphic design and its influence on creativity in visual communication.<\/p>\n

She completed her undergraduate studies in Graphic Design at Morehead State University in 2008, and obtained her Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Memphis in 2014.<\/p>\n

[320right]Prior to obtaining her masters, Rachel was the sole graphic designer at the University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia. Rachel\u2019s clients include the Nashville Zoo, Young Life, United States Department of Agriculture Conservation Department, The Salvation Army, Kroger Helping Hands, University of Memphis Art Museum, Prime Fitness, and the City of Clarksville.<\/p>\n

Rachel continues to study humor as an effective method of visual communication and its influence on creativity in the graphic design classroom. She completed her thesis on the subject of humor, entitled \u201cHumor is No Laughing Matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Art & Lunch: The Development of a Painting<\/strong>

Members from the 2Rivers Society of Painters will discuss their processes and artwork on exhibit in the Planters Bank Peg Harvill Gallery through January 1. Admission to the program is free.<\/p>\n

Second Saturday Free Admission<\/strong>
\nDecorate Your Own (Paper) Gingerbread Cookies
\nSaturday, December 9th | 10:00am\u201312:00pm and 2:00pm\u20134:00pm<\/p>\n

The museum is open to the public with free admission as part of our Second Saturday Free Admission Day from 10:00am\u20135:00pm. Join us in the Family Art Studio to decorate some paper gingerbread cookies from 10:00am\u201312:00pm and 2:00pm\u20134:00pm. This activity is included with no charge.<\/p>\n

DIY Catch Ball Toy<\/strong>
\nSaturday, December 16th | 10:00am\u201312:00pm and 2:00pm\u20134:00pm<\/p>\n

Try your luck with the classic catch ball toy, then construct your own using plastic cups and popsicle sticks in the Family Art Studio. This activity is included with your admission fee or Museum membership.<\/p>\n

Holiday Model Trains<\/strong>
\nDecember 19th\u201320th & 28th-29th | 10:00am\u20131:30pm<\/p>\n

Our volunteer train crew will be manning the Snowflake Special model trains for special runs this December.<\/p>\n

December Activities in the Family Art Studio: Comic Strip Art<\/strong><\/p>\n

Did you know that Charles Schulz, creator of the comic strip \u201cPeanuts\u201d, was stationed at Fort Campbell (then Camp Campbell) in 1943? While he was there, he received training as a machine gunner.<\/p>\n

During some of his free time, he made sketches of life on the military installation. Visit the Family Art Studio this month and enjoy some of your favorite comic strips, such as \u201cThe Far Side\u201d, \u201cCalvin and Hobbs\u201d, and \u201cPeanuts\u201d. Then create your own comic strip story.<\/p>\n

Adults and teens are encouraged to participate in this activity. Feel free to post your strips in the Studio. They will be available for you to pick up January 9th\u201320th.<\/p>\n

Closings<\/h3>\n

The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center will be closed Sunday, December 24th through Tuesday, December 26th for the Christmas holiday. We will also be closed Monday, January 1st in observance of New Years Day.<\/p>\n

About the Customs House Museum<\/h3>\n

\"Customs<\/a>Located in the heart of historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is the State\u2019s second largest general museum. The original portion of the building was constructed in 1898 as a U.S. Post Office and Customs House for the flourishing tobacco trade. Incorporating a number of architectural styles, the original structure is one of the most photographed buildings in the region.<\/p>\n

With over 35,000 square feet of the region\u2019s best hands-on activities and special events\u2026people of all ages agree \u2013 the Customs House Museum is well worth the stop!<\/p>\n

The Explorer\u2019s Gallery is packed with fun, learning and fantasy in Aunt Alice\u2019s Attic, McGregor\u2019s Market and kitchen, and of course \u2013 the Bubble Cave! Finally, get \u201call aboard\u201d to see our fantastic model trains. Our volunteer engineers \u201cride the rails\u201d every Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.<\/p>\n

Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Senior Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.<\/p>\n
