{"id":24804,"date":"2017-09-18T08:00:16","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=24804"},"modified":"2017-09-18T01:25:04","modified_gmt":"2017-09-18T06:25:04","slug":"austin-peay-state-university-art-design-welcome-nato-thompson-for-artist-lecture-on-september-20th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2017\/09\/18\/austin-peay-state-university-art-design-welcome-nato-thompson-for-artist-lecture-on-september-20th\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay State University Art + Design welcome Nato Thompson for artist lecture on September 20th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The Austin Peay State University Department of Art + Design, along with the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (CECA), will present Nato Thompson, author, curator and artistic director of Creative Time, at 6:00pm on September 20th, 2017 for an artist lecture in the Art + Design Building\u2019s Heydel Hall.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/APSU-Art-Design-presents-Nato-Thompson-for-artist-lecture.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-394183\" title=\"Nato Thompson to give artist lecture in the Austin Peay Art + Design Building\u2019s Heydel Hall September 20th.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/APSU-Art-Design-presents-Nato-Thompson-for-artist-lecture-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Nato Thompson to give artist lecture in the Austin Peay Art + Design Building\u2019s Heydel Hall September 20th.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Thompson joined Creative Time in January 2007, where he has organized such major projects as The Creative Time Summit (2009\u20132015), Pedro Reyes\u2019&nbsp;<em>Doomocracy<\/em>&nbsp;(2016), Kara Walker\u2019s&nbsp;<em>A Subtlety<\/em>&nbsp;(2014),&nbsp;<em>Living as Form<\/em>&nbsp;(2011),&nbsp;Trevor Paglen\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Last Pictures<\/em>&nbsp;(2012),&nbsp;Paul Ram\u00edrez Jonas\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Key to the City<\/em>&nbsp;(2010), Jeremy Deller\u2019s&nbsp;<em>It is What it is<\/em>&nbsp;(2009,&nbsp;with New Museum curators Laura Hoptman and Amy Mackie),&nbsp;<em>Democracy in America: The National Campaign<\/em>&nbsp;(2008), and Paul Chan\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Waiting for Godot in New Orleans<\/em>&nbsp;(2007), among others.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, he worked as curator at MASS MoCA, where he completed numerous large-scale exhibitions, including&nbsp;<em>The Interventionists: Art in the Social Sphere<\/em>&nbsp;(2004), with a catalogue distributed by MIT Press. His writings have appeared in numerous publications,&nbsp;including <em>BookForum<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Frieze<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Artforum<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Third Text<\/em>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Huffington Post<\/em>. In 2005, he received the Art Journal Award for distinguished writing.<\/p>\n<p>For Independent Curators International, Thompson curated the exhibition&nbsp;<em>Experimental Geography<\/em>&nbsp;with a book available from Melville House Publishing. He has written two books of cultural criticism,&nbsp;<em>Seeing Power: Art and Activism in the 21st Century<\/em>&nbsp;(2015) and&nbsp;<em>Culture as Weapon: The Art of Influence in Everyday Life,<\/em>&nbsp;to be published in January 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe in the power of dreams to produce change in the world,\u201d he said. \u201cOften that has been a project produced and driven forward by artists. But I am also aware that the game of seduction goes far beyond where artists exist in today&#8217;s world. That is why I both push forward with art and artists, but also am aware of a complex landscape where making culture is part of many facets of daily life. I think to be relevant in the 21st century in terms of culture making, one needs to confront this complex landscape head-on in order to find now opportunities, escapes, and revolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heydel Hall is room 120 of the Art + Design Building.
