New art program lets kindness rock Clarksville<\/h2>\n

\"ClarksvilleClarksville, TN<\/strong> – Clarksville\u2018s children, along with a fair number of adults, are adding to the city\u2019s public art inventory\u2014one rock at a time.<\/p>\n

And they are engaging in random acts of kindness as they offer others the joy of a chance rock discovery.<\/p>\n

In a trend that is sweeping the nation, Clarksvillians are painting rocks\u2014big rocks, little rocks, smooth rocks, backyard rocks\u2014and hiding them around town for others to find, keep, re-hide, or substitute with a painted rock of their own.<\/p>\n

Rita Arancibia, founder of Arts for Hearts, is harnessing this movement in that organization\u2019s Clarksville Kindness Rocks project to promote random acts of kindness using art as a creative way to touch people.<\/p>\n

Clarksville\u2019s Finest recently joined the Clarksville Kindness Rocks program sponsored by Arts for Hearts, a program under the umbrella of Clarksville-Montgomery County Arts and Heritage Development Council.<\/p><\/div>\n

Arts for Hearts, which operates under the umbrella of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Arts and Heritage Development Council, has as its mission to bring together artists and volunteers to build a vibrant and connected community engaged in creating, discovering and participating in the arts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people think about art, they often think of paintings in museums and galleries,\u201d Arancibia says, \u201cbut art exists in all of us. For me, art is a joyful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She says painting rocks is a perfect way to overcome the barrier of feeling artistically challenged. \u201cRocks are a part of nature. Anyone can paint a rock,\u201d she notes. \u201cWhen you paint and hide a rock, you are creating this little treasure that you share to give you and others joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Clarksville<\/a>Arancibia established Clarksville Kindness Rocks program to connect Clarksville\u2019s rock-painting effort to the larger, international Kindness Rocks movement. \u201cIt matters that art is connected to the act of being kind,\u201d Arancibia argues. \u201cIt\u2019s a simple way to give to others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arancibia sees Clarksville Kindness Rocks as a way to integrate arts more fully into our lives and to sponsor a connection to our community. \u201cIt brings love and a connection that transcends the art itself. It inspires, comforts and unites us,\u201d she suggests.<\/p>\n

Many families on their own are painting rocks to place somewhere in the community. A look at Facebook\u2019s Clarksville Rocks and Clarksville Kindness Rocks pages shows dozens of folks displaying rocks they\u2019ve painted with hints of where they\u2019ll be hidden and of beaming children holding up rocks they\u2019ve found and plan to re-hide for someone else to share that joy.<\/p>\n

Arancibia set up the Clarksville Kindness Rocks page only a month ago and already it has more than 1,200 followers.<\/p>\n

Arts for Hearts has sponsored a number of rock painting and hiding programs to get families started. They recently worked with the Junior Rangers at Dunbar Cave State Natural Area to decorate rocks to place around the grounds for visitors to discover. The Clarksville Police Department has also joined the program to paint and distribute kindness rocks.<\/p>\n

[320right]This week as one of their bi-monthly free art sessions at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library, Arts for Hearts sponsored a rock-painting program with the theme of Kindness Is Cool-Back to School: Spreading Art and Kindness.<\/p>\n

The group is planning a fun-filled way to commemorate Clarksville\u2019s position in the upcoming solar eclipse. On Aug. 19, they will host Clarksville Rocks the Great Eclipse, where children\u2014and adults\u2014can paint coronas or other representational images of the eclipse on rocks, create watercolor paintings, or make booklets to record their eclipse experiences.<\/p>\n

This event is a fundraiser to allow Arts for Hearts to continue to bring free art experiences to the community. Each art project will cost $5.00. Tickets can purchased at the door or on Eventbrite.<\/p>\n

Funds from this event also will be shared with After Deployment, a program to support military and their families experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.<\/p>\n
