{"id":24563,"date":"2017-07-26T06:00:17","date_gmt":"2017-07-26T11:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=24563"},"modified":"2017-07-25T22:24:46","modified_gmt":"2017-07-26T03:24:46","slug":"apsu-receives-79954-in-thec-funding-to-help-veterans-and-service-members-earn-degrees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2017\/07\/26\/apsu-receives-79954-in-thec-funding-to-help-veterans-and-service-members-earn-degrees\/","title":{"rendered":"APSU receives $79,954 in THEC funding to help veterans and service members earn degrees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) recently announced that Austin Peay State University will receive $79,954 in additional funding and program support to serve veterans and service members and help them earn post-secondary degrees as a part of Governor Bill Haslam\u2019s Drive to 55.<\/p>\n<p>Austin Peay is one of 13 colleges and universities in Tennessee to receive a portion of the $760,781 in total Veteran Reconnect funds to support programs and services for student veterans at campuses across the state.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_235747\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/APSU-Fort-Campbell-building.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235747\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-235747\" title=\"APSU Center at Fort Campbell.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/APSU-Fort-Campbell-building-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"APSU Center at Fort Campbell.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-235747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APSU Center at Fort Campbell.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The 2017 grant program is specifically focused on improving the assessment of prior learning for student veterans returning to college, helping them convert previous military experience into college credit, and improving the transition between military service and postsecondary education.<\/p>\n<p>THEC will provide technical assistance and professional development to Veteran Reconnect campuses around prior learning assessment (PLA) for veterans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Tennessee, there are an estimated 83,000 veterans with some college credit but no degree, and we are committed to making it easier for them to transition into higher education and graduate,\u201d Haslam said. \u201cVeterans bring valuable experience and learning from their time in the service, and through Veteran Reconnect, we are helping them turn that experience into credit, earn postsecondary degrees and move into quality jobs after serving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Institutions receiving the grants are required to develop and implement new evaluation processes for translating military training into academic credit, while also ensuring that prospective and incoming student veterans have easy, clear access to the information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustin Peay will use the Veterans Reconnect Grant to develop a system to evaluate military experience for academic credit to better support our military and veteran students,\u201d Dr. Kristine Nakutis, executive director of the Austin Peay Center at Fort Campbell, said. \u201cThis will standardize credit application across the curriculum and help our students achieve their academic goals sooner. We want to give them the credit they have already earned through their military service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Veteran Reconnect will provide funding from August 1st, 2017 until January 31st, 2019.
