(APSU)

Earlier this summer, Austin Peay State University made this type of education a priority when it renamed its College of Science and Mathematics the College of STEM. The University is now the first and only school in Tennessee with a College of STEM.

“Colleges of STEM are pretty rare, due to the fact that it’s uncommon to get science, technology, engineering and mathematics all under the same roof,” Dr. Jaime Taylor, dean of the APSU College of STEM, said. “Austin Peay is very forward thinking for grouping those areas together.”

On May 11th, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission approved Austin Peay’s first engineering program, allowing the University to begin offering a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree, with a major in Engineering Physics next fall. That degree added the “E” to the college already offering degree programs in science, technology and mathematics.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-386614" class="wp-image-386614" title="Austin Peay State University Physics Class. And when students graduate from APSU’s College of STEM, they’ll enter a workforce in desperate need of their skills.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), “Employment in occupations related to STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—is projected to grow to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022.”

A January 2017 BLS report also stated that “the national average wage for all STEM occupations was $87,570, nearly double the national average wage for non-STEM occupations ($45,700). Ninety-three out of 100 STEM occupations had wages significantly above the national average wage for all occupations of $48,320.”

“Austin Peay is now a major provider of STEM education in Tennessee,” Taylor said.

For information on APSU’s College of STEM, call 931.221.7971.

Clarksville, TN – In the next decade, analysts predict that Amazon, Apple, Google or Tesla will become the world’s first trillion-dollar, publicly traded company.
