{"id":24253,"date":"2017-05-12T12:20:12","date_gmt":"2017-05-12T17:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=24253"},"modified":"2017-05-12T12:20:12","modified_gmt":"2017-05-12T17:20:12","slug":"austin-peays-courtney-cousin-colleen-white-receive-harold-love-outstanding-community-service-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2017\/05\/12\/austin-peays-courtney-cousin-colleen-white-receive-harold-love-outstanding-community-service-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay\u2019s Courtney Cousin, Colleen White receive Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; When Courtney Cousin walked across the stage to accept her Bachelor in Business Administration in business marketing from Austin Peay State University in early May, it was an affirmation of her work in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>One month earlier, Cousin\u2019s tireless work in the community was recognized as the APSU senior joined APSU biology instructor Colleen White in receiving the 2017 Tennessee Higher Education Commission Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_382312\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Courtney-Cousin.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-382312\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-382312\" title=\"APSU's Courtney Cousin\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Courtney-Cousin-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"APSU's Courtney Cousin\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-382312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APSU&#8217;s Courtney Cousin<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->The award was named in 1997 for the late state representative who was instrumental in passing legislation to create programs to recognize outstanding community service among higher education students, faculty and staff. Each recipient receives a $1,000 cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Chattanooga, Cousin is active in a number of service organizations, including the NAACP, Habitat for Humanity and Circle K. In 2016 and 2017, Cousin was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award from APSU\u2019s Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement, as well as consecutive spots on the Vice President\u2019s Service Honor Roll, an honor given to APSU students who serve a minimum of 75 hours of community service in one academic year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a God-fearing young woman who loves to cook and serve the community,\u201d Cousin said. \u201cAlso, there were a total of five students in the state of Tennessee who were selected for this award, and we each had a great impact in our communities and on campus, so I think we all stood out in our own ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_382313\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Colleen-White.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-382313\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-382313\" title=\"APSU's Colleen White\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Colleen-White-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"APSU's Colleen White\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-382313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APSU&#8217;s Colleen White<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cousin has also played a leadership role in multiple honor societies, including Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity, where she served various positions including historian, director of service, chair of the service community and co-chair. She is also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta academic and Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor societies.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to service awards, Cousin has twice been awarded the white level leadership certificate \u2014 the highest available honor \u2014 from GOVSLEAD, APSU\u2019s student leadership education and development program.<\/p>\n<p>White was honored as a faculty recipient, having been recognized for her efforts with Hilldale Kiwanis Club of Clarksville. Through Kiwanis, White mentors both high school students in her role as Clarksville Key Club liaison, as well as college students as faculty advisor to APSU\u2019s newly chartered Circle K.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]White, who worked alongside Cousin as a member of APSU\u2019s Circle K, said the \u201cpassion\u201d Cousin displays for service is what set her apart from other candidates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can think of no student more deserving of this award; Courtney volunteers for everything, and as a Circle K member, she is always the first to sign up for service,\u201d White said. \u201cShe has single handedly started campus sustainability efforts (at APSU) \u2026quite frankly, she\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe just has a true passion for people and the environment, and both are obvious in everything she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cousin has plans for life after APSU, having recently accepted a job position with Aflac Insurance in Mt. Juliet. She said she also plans to continue the lessons she learned at APSU, volunteering in the Nashville area while also pursuing a master\u2019s degree in her spare time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am truly grateful that God has used me in this capacity to serve his people on campus and in the Clarksville community,\u201d Cousin said. \u201cI encourage all students to get involved as much as possible while in college.
