{"id":24133,"date":"2017-04-20T18:00:09","date_gmt":"2017-04-20T23:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=24133"},"modified":"2017-04-20T15:21:44","modified_gmt":"2017-04-20T20:21:44","slug":"city-of-clarksville-to-dedicate-frank-sutton-statue-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2017\/04\/20\/city-of-clarksville-to-dedicate-frank-sutton-statue-saturday\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Clarksville to dedicate Frank Sutton statue Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13405\" title=\"City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TN\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/clarksville-logo-rgb-450x174.jpg\" alt=\"City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TN\" height=\"93\" width=\"240\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; A statue of actor Frank \u201cSergeant Carter\u201d Sutton, who was born and raised in Clarksville, will be dedicated at 1:30pm Saturday on Franklin Street in Downtown Clarksville.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Holleman, civic leader and broker\/owner of Coldwell Banker Conroy, Marable &amp; Holleman working with the City of Clarksville, led the drive to place the statue &#8212; created by local sculptor Scott Wise &#8212; near the Roxy Theatre in Sutton\u2019s hometown.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_379615\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Frank-Sutton-Statue.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-379615\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-379615\" title=\"Frank \u2018Sergeant Carter\u2019 Sutton statue to be unveiled near Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Frank-Sutton-Statue-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Frank \u2018Sergeant Carter\u2019 Sutton statue to be unveiled near Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-379615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frank \u2018Sergeant Carter\u2019 Sutton statue to be unveiled near Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cThis all started when one of my agents, Pat Powers, a distant relative of&nbsp; Frank Sutton, and I started talking about making this a company project,\u201d Holleman said. \u201cWe decided to do it, conferred with the city about how to make it happen, then formed a committee, found some investors, and raised some money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The City of Clarksville, which accepted donation of the completed statue from the committee, prepared the site and&nbsp; installed the work this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank Mark and the committee for their work,\u201d Mayor Kim McMillan said. \u201cFrank Sutton remains a \u2018favorite son\u2019 of our community and this is a fitting tribute to him. He gave distinguished service to our country, and by all accounts, he was always fond Clarksville, and remained true to his relatives and roots here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sutton, who took to the stage as a student at East High School in Nashville, where his family moved when he was 8, returned to Clarksville after high school and worked as a radio announcer. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, he began a notable career as an actor, with many TV roles in shows such as \u201cThe Twilight Zone\u201d and \u201cGunsmoke,\u201d and a significant role in the Academy Award-winning movie \u201cMarty.\u201d But Sutton will always be remembered for his breakthrough role as tough Marine Corps Sergeant Vince Carter in the \u201cGomer Pyle\u201d television series with Jim Nabors.<\/p>\n<p>Holleman said the investors in the Sutton Statue are Planters Bank, the Hand Family Companies, Two Rivers Company, Dr. Alan and Donna Warner; Bill and Fran Powers; J. and Rhonda Runyon, and Coldwell Banker Conroy, Marable &amp; Holleman. The granite base was donated by Clarksville Memorial Co.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSutton grew up downtown, so we thought it would be good to put it downtown,\u201d Holleman said, \u201cand we wanted a local artist, so we turned to Scott Wise, who did a great job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holleman notes that Sutton also is being honored for his military service and his long service to veterans and veterans organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not only a famous actor, but he has a great military history behind him,\u201d Holleman said.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Spencer Sutton was born October 23r, 1923, the only child of Frank Sims Sutton and Thelma Spencer Sutton. The couple met while employed at The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle.<\/p>\n<p>Sutton died of a sudden heart attack in 1974 at age 50 in Shreveport, LA, while preparing for a theatrical performance.
