{"id":23932,"date":"2017-03-10T10:00:51","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T16:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=23932"},"modified":"2017-03-10T03:08:06","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T09:08:06","slug":"cmcss-students-participate-in-diversity-day-at-clarksville-lowes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2017\/03\/10\/cmcss-students-participate-in-diversity-day-at-clarksville-lowes\/","title":{"rendered":"CMCSS students participate in Diversity Day at Clarksville Lowe\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-175381\" title=\"Clarksville-Montgomery County School System - CMCSS\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Clarksville-Montgomery-County-School-System.jpg\" alt=\"Clarksville-Montgomery County School System - CMCSS\" width=\"240\" height=\"83\"\/><strong>Montgomery County, TN<\/strong> &#8211; Students from the Transitions Program of the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System got to spend the day shadowing staff at Lowe\u2019s on Lowe\u2019s Drive, learning how to perform various roles at the home improvement store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Transitions Program works to prepare students for competitive, paid employment after high school,\u201d stated Cassie Allen, CMCSS Transition Coordinator of Special Populations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_375534\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Lowes-employee-teaches-CMCSS-students-about-caring-for-plants.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-375534\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-375534\" title=\"Lowe's employee teaches CMCSS students about caring for plants.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Lowes-employee-teaches-CMCSS-students-about-caring-for-plants-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"Lowe's employee teaches CMCSS students about caring for plants.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-375534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lowe&#8217;s employee teaches CMCSS students about caring for plants.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cOur students are given hands-on experiences along with job and academic instruction to allow them to explore different work experiences to determine what is the best fit for them in their futures,\u201d Allen said.<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<br \/>\nAt Diversity Day recently, students were assigned teams and rotated around stations learning different facets of working at Lowe\u2019s. Staff taught students how to operate cash registers, mix paint, care for plants, keep customers safe, and reduce inventory loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShadowing the Lowe&#8217;s employees gave our students a first-hand look at a real-world work environment,\u201d according to Allen.<\/p>\n<p>Diversity Day was developed as a partnership between Lowe\u2019s and the CMCSS Transitions Program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking and partnering with the community has always been a passion of mine,\u201d stated Mariah Cary, Lowe\u2019s of Clarksville Human Resource Manager. \u201cWhen I first spoke with Cassie about the Special Populations Department and met some of the students, I knew I absolutely had to have them come to our store.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This day was one of the most impactful events I have ever done. To see the pure joy and eagerness to learn on the students faces and the leadership initiative from our employees, made me heart so full,&#8221; stated Cary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartnering with businesses allows the businesses to see the rigorous preparation our Transition students go through in order to be prepared for employment,\u201d stated Allen. \u201cWe want to thank Lowe&#8217;s for the opportunity to allow our students to shadow their workers for the day. The students gained valuable insight on how day-to-day operations work at a major retail chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a partnership I hope to continue in the future, and I really hope to have some of the interns and students on board with us at Lowe&#8217;s store 0498,\u201d Cary said about Diversity Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been an amazing experience for our students and our transition team,\u201d Taylia Griffith, CMCSS Director of Special Populations stated. \u201cWe are so thankful for the partnership that has blossomed between Lowe\u2019s and our Special Populations programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We strongly believe in our students\u2019 abilities, and Lowe\u2019s is proof that our community supports that belief.
