{"id":23893,"date":"2017-03-02T06:00:12","date_gmt":"2017-03-02T12:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=23893"},"modified":"2017-03-02T02:10:52","modified_gmt":"2017-03-02T08:10:52","slug":"austin-peay-state-university-student-newspaper-staff-wins-10-awards-at-southeast-journalism-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2017\/03\/02\/austin-peay-state-university-student-newspaper-staff-wins-10-awards-at-southeast-journalism-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay State University student newspaper staff wins 10 awards at Southeast Journalism Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\"\/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The Austin Peay State University student newspaper, The All State, earned 10 awards from the Southeast Journalism Conference, including first place and second place for Best Press Photography, during the annual conference in Oxford, Mississippi on Friday, February 17th, 2017.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_374931\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/The-All-State-Staff-APSU-student-newspaper-wins-10-awards-at-Southeast-Journalism-Conference.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-374931\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-374931\" title=\"The All State staff won 10 awards Friday at Southeast Journalism Conference.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/The-All-State-Staff-APSU-student-newspaper-wins-10-awards-at-Southeast-Journalism-Conference-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"The All State staff won 10 awards Friday at Southeast Journalism Conference.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"\/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-374931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The All State staff won 10 awards Friday at Southeast Journalism Conference.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Individual staff members earning awards were:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ranked 1<sup>st<\/sup> for Best Press Photography<br \/>\nHunter Abrams, freshman and staff photographer<\/li>\n<li>Ranked 2<sup>nd<\/sup> for Best Press Photography<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Taylor Slifko, alumna and former photo editor<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ranked 2<sup>nd<\/sup> for Best Magazine Page Layout Designer<br \/>\nCeleste Malone, senior and editor-in-chief<\/li>\n<li>Ranked 3<sup>rd<\/sup> for On-Site Copy Editing<br \/>\nEthan Steinquest, senior and managing editor<\/li>\n<li>Ranked 6<sup>th<\/sup> for Best Arts &amp; Entertainment Writer<br \/>\nAndrew Wadovick, junior and features editor<\/li>\n<li>Ranked 8<sup>th<\/sup> for Best News Writer<br \/>\nEthan Steinquest, senior and managing editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cI love the uniqueness of humans and their actions,\u201d Abrams, from Nashville, Tennessee, said. \u201cAny of the photos I have taken can never be recreated or imitated because the emotions of this year cannot be made again.\u201d Abrams submitted photos from the Governors football team loss to Murray State University, Lil Govs\u2019 Child Learning Center pumpkin patch event and the 2016 Homecoming Concert featuring Frankie Ballard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am in awe of the amazing dedication, work and tremendous passion the staff has exemplified this year,\u201d Malone said. \u201cEach member of The All State has continuously blown me away with every edition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper staff partnered with the APSU Student Government Association and the Political Science department to host Debate Watch viewings of the presidential debates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlacing 2nd in the Public Service Journalism category encompasses the reason we do what we do,\u201d Malone said. \u201cWe are serving and representing our student community as best as we can and this award shows that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper earned a ranking of 2<sup>nd<\/sup> in the Best College Magazine category for the 2016 Election Guide special edition of The All State. The newspaper also earned a ranking of 2<sup>nd<\/sup> for Best Public Service Journalism for their coverage of the 2016 Election and issues relating to students before Election Day and after.<\/p>\n<p>The All State also earned 4<sup>th<\/sup> for Best College website and 6<sup>th<\/sup> for Best College Newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe All State has put in a lot of effort over the past year to earn these awards, and I&#8217;m proud to see that being recognized,\u201d Steinquest said. \u201cWe have a very talented staff, and it&#8217;s a pleasure to work with them every week.\u201d There were a total of 469 entries from 29 colleges and universities across the southeast in this year\u2019s Best of the South competition at SEJC.<\/p>\n<h3>Students attending the conference were:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Lauren Cottle, senior and perspective editor<\/li>\n<li>Noah Houck, sophomore and assistant sports editor<\/li>\n<li>Celeste Malone, senior and editor-in-chief<\/li>\n<li>Aaliyah Mitchell, junior and assistant features editor<\/li>\n<li>Ethan Steinquest, senior and managing editor<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Wadovick, junior and features editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great honor to receive such an award. I\u2019ve loved writing since I was in high school, and it\u2019s a humbling experience to see other people awarding me for my work,\u201d Wadovick said of his win. \u201cIt\u2019s times like this when I know I chose the right career path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, The All State earned two second-place national Pinnacle Awards from the College Media Association, with 176 colleges and universities competing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m also excited to see the publication&#8217;s continued trend of success \u2026 It\u2019s a great affirmation of our service to the APSU community,\u201d Steinquest said.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper publishes each Wednesday in print, which is distributed on APSU\u2019s Clarksville and Fort Campbell campuses.
