{"id":2340,"date":"2010-05-15T11:00:45","date_gmt":"2010-05-15T16:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=2340"},"modified":"2010-05-14T22:44:57","modified_gmt":"2010-05-15T03:44:57","slug":"tennessee-highway-patrol-remembers-fallen-troopers-and-officers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2010\/05\/15\/tennessee-highway-patrol-remembers-fallen-troopers-and-officers\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee Highway Patrol remembers fallen troopers and officers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"thpcar2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/thpcar2-200x94.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"94\" \/>In observance of National Police Week, the Tennessee Highway Patrol today honored State Troopers and other law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty at its annual Memorial Service at the Tennessee Department of Safety Headquarters on Foster Avenue in Nashville.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>TDOS Commissioner Dave Mitchell welcomed Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn as the event\u2019s keynote speaker, while Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Mike Walker, members of THP\u2019s Command Staff, current and former State Troopers, and family members of fallen officers were also on hand for the ceremony.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNational Police Week, marked by our Trooper Memorial Service is always a special time of year,\u201d said Commissioner Mitchell.\u00a0 \u201cThose in law enforcement dedicate their lives to ensure the safety and security of others. Today and throughout the week, we have an opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women we have lost; to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice; and to remember those to whom we will forever be indebted for their service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony featured a pair of time-honored traditions in the roll call of fallen officers and the laying of wreaths, where Commissioner Mitchell and Colonel Walker rested three wreaths in front of the Memorial Monument outside the Department of Safety Headquarters.\u00a0 Other highlights included a 21-gun salute by THP\u2019s Special Operations Unit, a flyover from THP helicopters in a unique formation with one peeling off to represent \u201cthe missing man,\u201d T.A.P.S played by Sequatchie County deputy Chris Walker, \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d by Piper Todd Boswell, and a special appearance from the Tennessee National Guard\u2019s 129th Army Band.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_34976\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 490px;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Commissioner-Mitchell-Col-Walker.jpg\" title=\"Commissioner Dave Mitchell and Colonel Mike Walker.\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Commissioner Dave Mitchell and Colonel Mike Walker.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Commissioner-Mitchell-Col-Walker-480x322.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a> Commissioner Dave Mitchell and Colonel Mike Walker.<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very honored to share in this day with the Tennessee Highway Patrol,\u201d Director Gwyn said. \u201cRemembering those who have made a sacrifice with their lives reminds all of us in law enforcement how\u00a0dangerous our jobs can be.\u00a0It&#8217;s those who continue to serve, despite the potential risks, that are truly\u00a0dedicated to\u00a0the safety of our communities.\u201d Since the establishment of the Tennessee Highway Patrol in 1929, 38 Troopers have died in the line of duty.\u00a0 Sergeant Charles Hash was the first fatality on April 11th, 1930. He died after injuries sustained on motorcycle patrol in Shelby County.\u00a0 Trooper Calvin Jenks was the most recent Trooper killed after suffering gunshot wounds during a traffic stop in Tipton County. He died on January 6th, 2007.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow marks the National Peace Officers Memorial Day,\u201d said Colonel Mike Walker. \u201cToday, tomorrow, and forever, let us remember the 38 Tennessee State Troopers and over 19,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.\u00a0 They served and protected us all with tremendous courage and the utmost dedication, and they
