For thirty-two years, he\u2019s hosted the APSU Department of Music\u2019s wildly popular Halloween Percussion Concert, and each fall, he tries to top the previous year\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the biggest one ever,\u201d he said, slumping in his chair. \u201cI might have to just quit now.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_363481\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/APSU-Halloween-Concert.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-363481\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-363481\" title=\"APSU Department of Music\u2019s Halloween Percussion Concert.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/APSU-Halloween-Concert-480x320.jpg\" alt=\"APSU Department of Music\u2019s Halloween Percussion Concert.\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-363481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APSU Department of Music\u2019s Halloween Percussion Concert.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->The concert, which will have two performances at 6:00pm and 8:00pm on Friday, October 28th, will take place in the campus\u2019 Mabry Concert Hall, and in addition to his exhaustion, Steinquest seemed nervous about getting everyone on stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be huge,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re using the Governors\u2019 Own Marching Band, and the choir and Chamber Singers. I don\u2019t even know if they\u2019re all going to fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The marching band and choirs will join the University\u2019s percussion ensemble to open the show with a performance of German composer Carl Orff\u2019s \u201cCarmina Burana,\u201d a work that Steinquest claims is \u201cthe most famous piece for voices and instruments ever written in the history of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following this big opening number, the concert will move through an eclectic mix of music, from the terrifying theme to John Carpenter\u2019s 1978 horror film, \u201cHalloween,\u201d to the carnivalesque sounds of Czech composer JuliusFu\u010d\u00edk\u2018s \u201cThunder and Blazes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the quintessential circus music that everyone recognizes, and we\u2019ve got so many things happening in different places that the concert feels like a three-ring circus,\u201d Steinquest said.<\/p>\n<p>The evening will also feature special guest performances by APSU music faculty members Jeffery Williams, Gail Robinson-Oturu, Spencer Prewitt and Robert Waugh, and as always, the performers will be dressed in costumes to commemorate the October holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the Halloween concert is two cans of food, which will be donated to a local charity, or $5.00, but for the last few years, bothshows have sold out of tickets several days in advance.<\/p>\n<p>Contact the APSU Music Department office at 931.221.7818 for tickets or other information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; David Steinquest, Austin Peay State University professor of music, sat rubbing his gray beard, looking a little tired.
