{"id":22797,"date":"2016-07-15T11:56:07","date_gmt":"2016-07-15T16:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=22797"},"modified":"2016-07-15T11:56:07","modified_gmt":"2016-07-15T16:56:07","slug":"clarksville-youth-learn-about-miami-enjoy-the-bahamas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2016\/07\/15\/clarksville-youth-learn-about-miami-enjoy-the-bahamas\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarksville Youth Learn About Miami &#038; Enjoy The Bahamas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-174686\" title=\"LEAP Organization\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/leap-logo.jpg\" alt=\"LEAP Organization\" width=\"180\" height=\"190\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; Miami and the Bahamas were the destination for the LEAP Organization\u2019s 6th Annual Educational Excursion.<\/p>\n<p>Children from Clarksville along with chaperones and community members embarked on a five-day journey to Miami to educate LEAP youth by exposing them to other cities, cultural differences and historical landmarks.<\/p>\n<p>Participants visited the Holocaust Memorial, Jewish Museum, History of Miami Museum, and the Miccosukee Indian Village where they experienced an airboat ride through the everglades followed by an alligator show.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_350967\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Reservation4.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-350967\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-350967\" title=\"LEAP Youth visit Miccosukee Indian Village.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Reservation4-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"LEAP Youth visit Miccosukee Indian Village.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-350967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LEAP Youth visit Miccosukee Indian Village.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->One of the highlights for the kids was cruising to the Bahamas and enjoying swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and amongst many other beech activities at the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach all-inclusive resort.<\/p>\n<p>During a shopping excursion on Saturday, July 9th at the Bayside Marketplace the Black Lives Matter Movement stopped traffic with a peaceful march that was filled with a diverse group of protesters also advocating for All Lives Matters.<\/p>\n<p>LEAP participant Amir Davis expressed \u201cAny death is a tragedy. I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s black men or police. if it\u2019s unjustified it should and needs to stop!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can scream black lives matter and blue lives matter until our lungs burst, but only unity will help bring about significant change.&#8221; commented LEAP Executive Director and City Councilman Richard \u201cReason\u201d Garrett \u201cWe need to come together as one and stop going against each other in order to develop laws that provide equal protection and consequences for hate crimes driven by bigotry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the traditional group breakout sessions that are hosted during the trip on various topics, and emphases on quality youth to chaperone interaction was implemented to build rapport and address the unique concerns that each participant faced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first I thought this trip was going to be boring, but I have to admit it\u2019s been fun seeing and learning about different things. I\u2019m looking forward to holding Mr. Reason to the fishing trip he promised,\u201d said Talik Sturkie<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearning about how the Jewish people overcame the struggles gave me hope that I may live to see the day that black people are treated equally\u201d commented participant Kaevon Burney<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHanging out at the Bahamas was an awesome experience. I never imagined I would ever go snorkeling or kayaking. Swimming in the ocean with actual fish and plants was a cool experience. It sure beats a swimming pool, there are so many other things that I want to try in the ocean\u201d expressed Kenan Pucket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really enjoy planning these trips for LEAP each year and seeing these kids broadening their horizons from leaning about different cultures and life outside of Clarksville,\u201d shared Laquvia Garrett \u201cIt\u2019s experiences like these that really help stretch the imaginations of our future leaders to reach for the stars and avoid being content with the status quo\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next summer\u2019s educational excursion will be to Chicago, Illinois.
