{"id":22318,"date":"2016-04-10T10:00:27","date_gmt":"2016-04-10T15:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=22318"},"modified":"2016-04-10T04:09:39","modified_gmt":"2016-04-10T09:09:39","slug":"austin-peay-state-universitys-phi-alpha-theta-students-perform-well-at-regional-history-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2016\/04\/10\/austin-peay-state-universitys-phi-alpha-theta-students-perform-well-at-regional-history-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay State University\u2019s Phi Alpha Theta students perform well at regional history conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Stephen Carls, professor and chair of the department of history at Union University, and Peeps go way back.<\/p>\n<p>Besides just enjoying the spongy yellow candies, Carls can appreciate a bit of shared history as both Peeps and Union\u2019s Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) history honor society chapter, which he has served as advisor for since 1983, were founded the same year: 1953.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_340387\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/APSU\u2019s-Phi-Alpha-Theta-students-perform-well-at-regional-history-conference.jpg\"  rel=\"attachment wp-att-340387\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-340387\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-340387\" title=\"APSU\u2019s Phi Alpha Theta students attend national honor society\u2019s annual regional conference on the campus of Union University.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/APSU\u2019s-Phi-Alpha-Theta-students-perform-well-at-regional-history-conference-480x238.jpg\" alt=\"APSU\u2019s Phi Alpha Theta students attend national honor society\u2019s annual regional conference on the campus of Union University.\" width=\"480\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-340387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APSU\u2019s Phi Alpha Theta students attend national honor society\u2019s annual regional conference on the campus of Union University.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->When Austin Peay State University hosted the PAT regional conference in 2015, Carls, who also currently serves as PAT\u2019s national president, thanked the coincidentally named hosts with a bit of a gag gift in the form of his favored confection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, Stephen gave me a Peeps Cookbook as a thank you gift for hosting the conference,\u201d Dr. Minoa Uffelman, assistant professor of history at APSU, said, noting the similarity between the candy and APSU\u2019s namesake, former Tennessee governor Austin Peay.<\/p>\n<p>One year later, Carls and Union University had their opportunity to host the national honor society\u2019s annual regional conference \u2013 and both APSU and its students were eager to return Carl\u2019s generosity.<\/p>\n<p>Nine APSU representatives, including both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professors, attended the event, held Saturday, April 2nd on the campus of Union University. More than 35 students from over 12 universities attended, with seven APSU students presenting papers and four conducting a workshop for those in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>Two APSU students won awards for their research papers, including Alexandria Poppendorf, who won Best Graduate Student Paper for her work, titled \u201cThe Influence of Masculinity upon American Imperialism: A Study of the Spanish-American War, the Anti-Imperialist Movement, and the Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.\u201d Priscilla Gutierrez also won an award for Undergraduate World History Paper for her her work, titled \u201cRavensbr\u00fcck: The Women behind the Walls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other APSU students presenting papers included Sara Alexander, \u201cConfederate Women in the American Civil War: From Sacrifice to Oppression\u201d; Robert Boone, \u201cThe Success and Failure of the Washington Naval Conference\u201d; Theresa Watts, \u201cThe Role of Shining Brass and the Covert Operations against the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos\u201d; Larissa Dougherty, \u201cFire Support Base RIPCORD: The Forgotten Last Major Offensive of the Vietnam War\u201d; and Katelynn DiStefano, \u201cThe Spanish Influenza: Its Effect on America and World War I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deanna Carter, Courtney Beard, Larissa Dougherty and Poppendorf also presented a student engagement workshop during the event, \u201cWhat Women Wore: A Collection of Women\u2019s Clothing and Accessories from the Nineteenth to Early Twentieth Century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[320left]APSU professors Dr. David Snyder and Dr. Kelly Jones also assisted during the conference, commenting on panels of students from other universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipation in the PAT Regional Conference is one of the most important events Theta-Delta members participate in. It is the culmination of students taking a class, writing a research paper, getting feedback from the professors to revise and improve the paper, and finally presenting the paper at the conference,\u201d Uffelman said. \u201cAfter the conference students can submit their papers to the student journal Theta-Delta for publication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for APSU returning Carls\u2019 generosity during their round of hosting in 2015, Uffelman said that the Clarksville contingent of history scholars did not forget the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew that (Carls) has a running joke about Peeps, so this year, we gave him a basket of \u2018Austin\u2019 Peeps,\u201d Uffelman said. \u201cHe loved it and so did we.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the University\u2019s PAT chapter, contact Uffelman at 931.221.7704.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; Dr. Stephen Carls, professor and chair of the department of history at Union University, and Peeps go way back.
