Hook Rugs Showcase the Joy of the Ocean<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Clarksville'sClarksville, TN<\/strong> – The Customs House Museum and the Clarksville-Montgomery County Arts and Heritage Development Council will present this April a national traveling exhibit of 12 works by fiber artists, including a piece by Clarksvillian Tamara Long.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the last line of the poem \u201cSea Joy\u201d by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, \u201cOh\u2014To live by the sea is my only wish,\u201d these works range from traditional representations of lobster shacks, fishing boats, sea gulls and beach vacations to more abstract representations of sea, sky, shells and sand.
\nSince she lives in land-locked Tennessee, Long\u2019s hooked rug is a collage of images from her vacations by the sea.<\/p>\n

The exhibit, entitled Oh, To Live by the Sea, will go up in one of the newly created galleries in Customs House Museum\u2019s lower level on April 23th, and will be on display now. AHDC will host a reception Sunday afternoon, April 17th, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, with a gallery talk at 2:30pm by exhibit curator Lisanne Miller. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

Tamara Long and other local hooked-rug artisans will offer demonstrations of this craft at the museum from 10:00am to 2:00pm Saturday, April 9th. Admission is free and open to the public as part of the museum\u2019s Second Saturday Free Admission day.<\/p>\n

Miller\u2019s rugs have appeared in the Wool Street Journal, Rug Hooking Magazine, and Association of Traditional Hooking Artists publications as well as the most recent book by Jessie Turbayne, \u201cRug Hookers of the Deep South.\u201d Her work is also featured in the new book, \u201cTop 40 at 40.\u201d<\/p>\n

She is owner of P Is for Primitive and Peace, Love and Wool in Canton, MS, and teaches rug-hooking techniques privately and in workshops across the country.<\/p>\n

This traveling exhibit has been shown at venues such as John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC; Caraway Rug School in Sophia, NC, Montgomery Bell State Park, the Jail House Rock Exhibit in Canton, Miss.; Mississippi Craftmen’s Guild in Ridgeland, MS; and Olde Cape Cod Rug School in Cape Cod, MA.<\/p>\n

Other artists whose work is included in the exhibit are Cheryl Bollenback, Golden, CO.; Molly Colegrove, Newark, NY; Jane Dunaway, Brandon, MS; Francine Even, Norwalk, CT; Evelyn Lawrence, Hallstead, PN.; Roslyn Logsdon, Bethesda, MD; Churchill McKinney, Fairfax, VA; Judy Parsons, Springville, AL; Kathy Spellacy, York, Maine; Loretta Scena, Deer Park, NY; Ali Strebel, Dayton, OH.<\/p>\n

About the Customs House Museum<\/h3>\n

\"Customs<\/a>Located in the heart of historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is the State\u2019s second largest general museum. The original portion of the building was constructed in 1898 as a U.S. Post Office and Customs House for the flourishing tobacco trade. Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Senior Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.<\/p>\n
