Collectively, these students completed nearly 500 hours of community service.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_337611\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/APSU-Students-spend-Spring-Break-doing-Community-Service.jpg\"  rel=\"attachment wp-att-337611\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-337611\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-337611\" title=\"Austin Peay Students spent a week volunteering during the Spring Break Holiday.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/APSU-Students-spend-Spring-Break-doing-Community-Service-480x270.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay Students spent a week volunteering during the Spring Break Holiday.\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-337611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Austin Peay Students spent a week volunteering during the Spring Break Holiday.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->From March 6th-11th, nine students and a staff member visited Washington, D.C., and spent part of their week volunteering with the DC Central Kitchen (DCCK), a community kitchen that recycles food from around the nation\u2019s capital and distributes it to the hungry. APSU students spent the week helping prepare food and participating in a nutrition lab run by DCCK.<\/p>\n<p>From March 6th-11th, eight students and a staff member traveled to Chapin, South Carolina, to work with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. The area surrounding Lake Murray experienced what has been called a \u201conce-in-a-thousand-years flood\u201d in October 2015, and APSU students went to help with relief and rebuild efforts. The group assisted St. Bernard\u2019s Project\u2014a rebuild and recovery nonprofit that was founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina\u2014in finishing a build project, including painting a home to make it move-in ready.<\/p>\n<p>From March 9-11, six students and a staff member made a series of day trips into Nashville to volunteer with the Nashville Rescue Mission. On Wednesday and Thursday, they worked the lunch and dinner shifts in the men\u2019s kitchen, preparing and serving meals alongside the touring cast of \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera,\u201d which was running at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Friday was spent across town assisting the women\u2019s campus with food prep and day-to-day operating tasks.<\/p>\n<p>The Alternative Break program is organized by the Center for Service-Learning &amp; Community Engagement at APSU. Through a written application, students are selected to participate in a variety of service projects throughout the country that are organized by student leaders and faculty and staff advisors.
