{"id":22027,"date":"2016-02-21T08:00:12","date_gmt":"2016-02-21T14:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=22027"},"modified":"2016-02-20T14:29:20","modified_gmt":"2016-02-20T20:29:20","slug":"sixth-annual-young-womens-leadership-symposium-coming-to-austin-peay-state-university-march-4th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2016\/02\/21\/sixth-annual-young-womens-leadership-symposium-coming-to-austin-peay-state-university-march-4th\/","title":{"rendered":"Sixth Annual Young Women&#8217;s Leadership Symposium coming to Austin Peay State University March 4th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; In 1964, a high-level AT&amp;T executive named Robert Greenleaf decided to retire from his stable position in order to redefine how Americans think of leadership.<\/p>\n<p>With his famous quote, \u201cGood leaders must first become good servants,\u201d Greenleaf gave life to the servant-leader movement, which became a staple in college business classes and executive seminars at the end of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century and the beginning of the 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/APSU-to-host-Sixth-Annual-Young-Womens-Leadership-Symposium.jpg\"  rel=\"attachment wp-att-335573\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-335573\" title=\"Sixth Annual Young Women's Leadership Symposium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/APSU-to-host-Sixth-Annual-Young-Womens-Leadership-Symposium-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Sixth Annual Young Women's Leadership Symposium \" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><!--more-->This marriage between service and leadership continues to thrive, and it will be the focus of this year\u2019s Sixth Annual Young Women\u2019s Leadership Symposium at Austin Peay State University.<\/p>\n<p>The event, which is free for individuals between the ages of 16-24, will be from 8:30am-1:30pm on March 4th, in the APSU Morgan University Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get away from thinking about the service being given when we think about our leaders in office,\u201d said Dr. Marsha Lyle-Gonga, symposium organizer and chair of the APSU Department Political Science. \u201cWe don\u2019t see how they\u2019re serving us. It is important that we look inward to ourselves and see how we can serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 118 young people, including 28 young men, attended the symposium to learn about the political process. This year\u2019s event, sponsored by the APSU Department of Political Science, will feature young speakers with experience in serving others.<\/p>\n<p>These speakers include Middle Tennessee State University student Verinique Bailey, founder of MTSU\u2019s I Am Me community service organization; Alexandra Wills, director of APSU\u2019s Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement; and Jennifer Rawls, director of communication for the City of Clarksville and former executive director of the Tennessee Economic Council on Women.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Amy Thompson, APSU associate professor of biology, will also discuss women in science, and Dr. Christina Hicks-Goldston, APSU assistant professor of communication, will give a presentation on generational stereotypes of women.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the free symposium, which includes a breakfast and lunch, visit <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apsu.edu\/polysci\/young-womens-leadership-symposium-registration-form\" >https:\/\/www.apsu.edu\/polysci\/young-womens-leadership-symposium-registration-form<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; In 1964, a high-level AT&amp;T executive named Robert Greenleaf decided to retire from his stable position in order to redefine how Americans think of leadership.
