When Mayor McMillan asked if they were doing some of the same things at home, Street Department Director David Shepard said a lot of the employees bring their recycling to the recycling containers at work. Sykes joked, “You can find a lot of detergent bottles in the plastics container but it isn’t because we’re doing laundry on the job.”

Some of the other things they did included, set points on thermostats, recycling of signage, turning trees into mulch through The Compost Company, saving water by putting aerators on the faucets, updating the Stormwater Management Manual and using Facebook as a means to communicate with the community.

Chris Cowen, traffic engineer, added that the city was recently approved for a no-interest, federally sponsored loan to switch from less efficient high pressure sodium bulbs to LED bulbs. “We will replace 25% of the City street lighting; focusing on the highest energy usage bulbs that stay on the longest in order to save the most money.”

Clarksville Street Department serves all residents in the City of Clarksville through road maintenance, drainage maintenance, traffic control and traffic engineering.
