{"id":21390,"date":"2015-10-10T10:00:53","date_gmt":"2015-10-10T15:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=21390"},"modified":"2015-10-10T04:30:53","modified_gmt":"2015-10-10T09:30:53","slug":"new-apsu-scholarship-to-help-east-tennessee-students-become-special-education-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2015\/10\/10\/new-apsu-scholarship-to-help-east-tennessee-students-become-special-education-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"New APSU scholarship to help East Tennessee students become Special Education teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-324279\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU - logo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Austin-Peay-State-University-APSU.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU - logo\" width=\"250\" height=\"64\" \/><\/a><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; Students from Scott and Blount counties interested in becoming special education teachers are eligible for a new scholarship at Austin Peay State University, thanks to a recent gift from an anonymous donor.<\/p>\n<p>The East Tennessee donor will give APSU\u2019s Martha Dickerson Eriksson College of Education (MDECOE) $50,000 over the next five years for its Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM) scholarship initiative. <!--more-->That project is working to increase the number of APSU students who want to teach special education to meet national and statewide shortages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will start distributing this new scholarship money in the spring,\u201d Dr. Erin Lynch-Alexander, APSU assistant professor of education and grant director, said. \u201cThe goal is to get students licensed so they can be special education teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new scholarship is only open to students from Scott and Blount counties, in East Tennessee, and applicants must meet the admissions requirements for the MDECOE.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Moniqueka E. Gold, chair of the Department of Educational Specialties in the MDECOE, is excited about increasing not only the number of highly-qualified special educators licensed in Tennessee, but also about having scholarship monies to help support deserving students from East Tennessee who have chosen to earn a college degree from APSU.<\/p>\n<p>The TEAM initiative is currently working to provide scholarships for students from other Tennessee counties,including Montgomery County, who are interested in teaching special education.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the scholarship or the TEAM initiative, contact Lynch-Alexander at <a href=\"mailto:lynche@apsu.edu\">lynche@apsu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; Students from Scott and Blount counties interested in becoming special education teachers are eligible for a new scholarship at Austin Peay State University, thanks to a recent gift from an anonymous donor.
