The influential theater critic Clement Scott, writing for The Daily Telegraph, called it \u201can open drain: a loathsome sore unbandaged; a dirty act done publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Scott and others in Victorian London, a play dealing with incest and venereal diseases seemed beyond profane, but today, the intense family drama is credited with helping usher in a new era in the world of theater.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Austin-Peay-State-University-Theatre-and-Dance-to-perform-Ghosts.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-305187\" title=\"Austin Peay State University Theatre and Dance to perform Ghosts\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Austin-Peay-State-University-Theatre-and-Dance-to-perform-Ghosts-480x270.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University Theatre and Dance to perform Ghosts\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><!--more-->\u201cIbsen became known as the father of modern drama, by sort of kick starting realism in the theater,\u201d Noel Rennerfeldt, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of theatre, said. \u201cAt that time, plays tended to be more melodramatic. They had distinct heroes and villains, and good always triumphed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhosts,\u201d influenced in part by a developing interest in sociology, offers a bleaker, more realistic view of life. The APSU Department of Theatre and Dance will conclude its 2014-15 season with performances of the controversial work, directed by Rennerfeldt, at 7:30pm, April 15th-18th, and at 2:00pm, April 19th, in the Trahern Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>In 2000, theatre critic Charles Spencer, writing for The Daily Telegraph more than 100 years after Scott\u2019s review, praised Ibsen\u2019s work, writing, \u201cThe brilliantly compelling and claustrophobic plot, which so skillfully weaves together the past and the present, snaps shut on Mrs. Alving and her son Oswald like a cruel mantrap, leaving them whimpering and desperate in the murky gloom.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Ghosts\u2019 is a pitiless play, which leaves both its characters and its audience without a shred of hope. Only the opportunists thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new production of \u201cGhosts\u201d will star APSU students Megan DeWald as Mrs. Alving, Josh Webb as Oswald Alving, Steven Howie as Reverend Manders, Alex Maynard as Jakkob Engstrand and Lauren Proctor as Regina Engstrand.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and military.
