{"id":20037,"date":"2015-03-18T16:00:59","date_gmt":"2015-03-18T21:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=20037"},"modified":"2015-03-18T02:11:22","modified_gmt":"2015-03-18T07:11:22","slug":"austin-peay-state-university-department-of-mathematics-and-statistics-places-first-in-maa-math-jeopardy-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2015\/03\/18\/austin-peay-state-university-department-of-mathematics-and-statistics-places-first-in-maa-math-jeopardy-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics places first in MAA Math Jeopardy Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; If the answer is \u201cThe best in the southeast,\u201d then the question is \u201cWhat is Austin Peay State University?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The APSU Math Jeopardy team recently bested 27 other schools to take home the 2015 Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Jeopardy championship at the MAA Southeastern Section meeting, held March 12th-14th on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.<!--more-->APSU\u2019s winning team was mentored by associate professor of mathematics, Dr. Ben Ntatin and consisted of team captain David Zhang, Mathew Rayburn, Ryan Honea and Thomas Clayborn.<\/p>\n<p>Ntatin\u2019s team blew away the competition, which consisted of squads from universities such as the University of Tennessee at Martin, Duke, The Citadel and South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>The Math Jeopardy contest is part of the MAA national and sectional annual meeting. Following the format of the game show \u201cJeopardy!,\u201d each team consists of up to four students who compete to answer the problems from the subjects of undergraduate mathematics, such as calculus, differential equations, discrete equations, discrete mathematics, linear algebra and history of mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Ntatin said that his team, which finished second in last year\u2019s competition, made some changes to its strategies.
