To accomplish that goal, he designed the body of the robot using simple LEGO blocks, as well as other cheap, easily accessible parts. To create the \u201cbrain\u201d of the robot, he designed an operating system that runs on an Android smartphone.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_293182\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Austin-Peay-State-University-student-earns-spot-in-major-robotics-research-competition-1.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-293182\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-293182\" title=\"A photo of Buhl-Brown's robotics project.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Austin-Peay-State-University-student-earns-spot-in-major-robotics-research-competition-1-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Buhl-Brown's robotics project.\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-293182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A photo of Buhl-Brown&#8217;s robotics project.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBack in the day when robotics were becoming a real thing, you had to buy a GPS, an accelerometer and all these other expensive sensors and somehow hook them all together,\u201d Buhl-Brown said. \u201cI use a phone because all of those (tools) are already built in and they\u2019re honestly about as powerful as a laptop was just two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[320left]Dr. John Nicholson, assistant professor of computer science and information technology, said Buhl-Brown is the first APSU student to be chosen to present his project at the prestigious event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Buhl-Brown\u2019s project) would really serve as someone\u2019s very first introduction to robotics, and that\u2019s why he designed a large part of it using simple things like LEGO bricks; he wanted to drive home that this could be a robot for beginners,\u201d Nicholson said. \u201cPeople interested in robotics will now be able to do more advanced things without having to buy a lot of new parts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd for our department, this is a big thing because we\u2019re trying to promote our research.
