Woodward Library and APSU\u2019s Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center will host four documentaries on the history of civil rights in America.<\/p>\n<p>The films are part of the National Endowment for the Humanities\u2019 (NEH) Created Equal: America\u2019s Civil Rights Struggle initiative.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/National-Endowment-for-the-Humanities-Created-Equal-Americas-Civil-Rights-Struggle.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-263364\" title=\"National Endowment for the Humanities Created Equal Americas Civil Rights Struggle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/National-Endowment-for-the-Humanities-Created-Equal-Americas-Civil-Rights-Struggle-480x156.jpg\" alt=\"National Endowment for the Humanities Created Equal Americas Civil Rights Struggle\" width=\"480\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a><!--more-->This program uses documentary films to encourage discussions of America\u2019s civil rights history.<\/p>\n<p>The NEH has partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to develop educational and discussion materials for the screenings.<\/p>\n<h4>The films, which will screen at 7:00pm on Tuesday nights in Clement 120, include:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Abolitionists\u201d<\/strong> on September 9th.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe Loving Story\u201d<\/strong> on September 16th.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cFreedom Riders\u201d<\/strong> on September 23rd.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cSlavery by Another Name\u201d<\/strong> on September 30th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>APSU will host a series of forums with each film, led by scholars from the Department of History and Philosophy, the Department of Languages and Literature, the Department of Political Science and the African American Studies program.<\/p>\n<p>APSU is one of 473 institutions across the country awarded a set of four films chronicling the history of the civil rights movement. The documentaries include dramatic scenes of incidents in the 150-year effort to achieve equal rights for all. \u201cFreedom Riders\u201d received an Emmy in 2012, and \u201cThe Loving Story and \u201cThe Abolitionists\u201d were nominated for Emmys in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese films chronicle the long and sometimes violent effort to achieve the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence\u2014life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness\u2014for all Americans,\u201d Nancy Gibson, associate professor at APSU, said. \u201cWe are pleased to receive a grant from NEH to provide programming around these films to help students realize how the hard-fought freedoms won over the last century should not be forgotten and taken for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More information on Created Equal is available online at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/created-equal\" >www.neh.gov\/created-equal<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; This September, Austin Peay State University\u2019s Felix G.
