Her reporting on Haitian orphanages following a massive earthquake in that country earned her an Emmy, and her work for CNN during Hurricane Katrina brought her and the network a George Foster Peabody Award.<\/p>\n<p>At 7:00pm on March 25th, O\u2019Brien will speak at the Memorial Health Gym (Red Barn) on the Austin Peay State University campus as part of the annual Student Affairs Unity Celebration. O\u2019Brien will deliver a speech titled \u201cDiversity: On TV, Behind the Scenes and In Our Lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Soledad-OBrien.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-210748\" title=\"Soledad O'Brien to speak at APSU Unity event\" alt=\"Soledad O'Brien to speak at APSU Unity event\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Soledad-OBrien-480x319.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><!--more-->The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by Student Affairs Programs, the APSU Diversity Task Force, the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center, Student Life and Engagement and Student Transitions.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, O\u2019Brien used her reporting skills to tackle another challenging topic \u2013 her own personal story as a minority journalist working in America \u2013 with her memoir, \u201cThe Next Big Story: My Journey Through the Land of Possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI began life as the child of a mixed-race marriage growing up in a white suburb, treated sometimes as a creature of bad circumstances,\u201d she writes in the introduction. \u201cMy immigrant parents made sure I had the potential to capture my American dream anyway. I was handed a life of possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien is a graduate of Harvard University and former anchor for the NBC program \u201cWeekend Today.\u201d In addition to reporting for CNN, she developed the popular documentary series \u201cBlack in America,\u201d and later \u201cLatino in America,\u201d for the network. In 2013, she joined HBO\u2019s \u201cReal Sports with Bryant Gumble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her documentary \u201cLatino in America 2\u201d won the Cine Award, and she was previously named journalist of the year by the National Association of Black Journalists.
