{"id":17299,"date":"2014-02-14T10:00:18","date_gmt":"2014-02-14T16:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=17299"},"modified":"2014-02-14T02:37:04","modified_gmt":"2014-02-14T08:37:04","slug":"apsu-hosting-tennessee-history-day-competition-on-february-24th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2014\/02\/14\/apsu-hosting-tennessee-history-day-competition-on-february-24th\/","title":{"rendered":"APSU hosting Tennessee History Day competition on February 24th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; On February 24th, 255 Middle and High School students from seven surrounding counties, along with their teachers, parents and supporters, will converge on the Austin Peay State University campus for the annual Tennessee History Day event.<\/p>\n<p>The University was selected two years ago as the host site for the newly formed North Middle Tennessee district of the national competition.<!--more-->The participating students will present projects in a wide range of categories, including performance, websites, exhibits, papers and documentary film, all centered on this year\u2019s theme of \u201cRights and Responsibilities in History.\u201d The winners in each category will go on to the state competition in Nashville. Students who place in that event will qualify for the National History Day Competition in College Park, MD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is always a great event because it help builds citizenship while also teaching students to think about the critical consequences of historical actions,\u201d Dr. Kristofer Ray, APSU associate professor of history and the event coordinator, said.<\/p>\n<p>The National History Day competition began in the early 1970s as a way of creating excitement in students toward the subject of history. More than half a million students now participate each year in the event, which helps them develop skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, research and oral and written communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this standardized test-driven world, Tennessee History Day reminds us that the humanities and critical thinking are essential,\u201d Ray said.<\/p>\n<p>The students will arrive at the campus\u2019s Morgan University Center early that morning and spend much of the day presenting their projects to panels of judges. Later that afternoon, an awards ceremony will be held for the top participants.
