{"id":17248,"date":"2014-02-04T16:00:25","date_gmt":"2014-02-04T22:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=17248"},"modified":"2014-02-04T13:19:54","modified_gmt":"2014-02-04T19:19:54","slug":"two-award-winning-poets-to-read-at-apsu-on-february-6th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2014\/02\/04\/two-award-winning-poets-to-read-at-apsu-on-february-6th\/","title":{"rendered":"Two award-winning poets to read at APSU on February 6th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"111\" \/>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; A few years ago, the award-winning poet Toi Derricotte read a collection of poems by Austin Peay State University alumnus Jeff Hardin, and she was immediately struck by the simple power and beauty of his words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeff Hardin is extremely sophisticated, mature and knows exactly what he is doing,\u201d she said.<!--more-->Derricotte, a member of the Academy of American Poets\u2019 Board of Chancellors, recommended the unpublished manuscript to Jacar Press, and in 2012, the press released Hardin\u2019s newest collection of poems, \u201cNotes for a Praise Book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 8:00pm on February 6th, both poets will visit APSU for a reading and book signing in the University\u2019s Morgan University Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Derricotte is the author of five collections of poetry, including the Paterson Poetry Prize-winning \u201cTender.\u201d In 1997, W.W. Norton published her memoir, \u201cThe Black Notebooks,\u201d which won the Anisfield-Wolf Award for Non-Fiction and was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She is a professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>Hardin graduated from APSU in 1990, and he went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama.
