{"id":16533,"date":"2013-10-16T10:00:59","date_gmt":"2013-10-16T15:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=16533"},"modified":"2013-10-16T06:33:48","modified_gmt":"2013-10-16T11:33:48","slug":"austin-peay-state-universitys-popular-halloween-concert-returns-for-29th-year-on-october-29th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2013\/10\/16\/austin-peay-state-universitys-popular-halloween-concert-returns-for-29th-year-on-october-29th\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay State University&#8217;s popular Halloween concert returns for 29th year on October 29th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University - APSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; At 6:00pm and 8:00pm on October 29th, the Austin Peay State University Department of Music will host a light-hearted, family-friendly concert about death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019re going to try and make death as fun as we can possibly make it,\u201d David Steinquest, APSU professor of music, said.<\/p>\n<p>This might sound a bit odd to those unfamiliar with the annual APSU Halloween Percussion Concert, but fans of the event know the theme will fit in nicely with the strange blend of music and mayhem that has come to define the wildly popular community event for the last 29 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_94693\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_4870.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94693\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-94693 \" title=\"The APSU Percussion Ensemble's Halloween Concert\" alt=\"The APSU Percussion Ensemble's Halloween Concert\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_4870-480x320.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-94693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The APSU Percussion Ensemble&#8217;s Halloween Concert<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->And as always, Steinquest and his band of APSU students and music faculty members will wear costumes to perform the Halloween-themed music in an eerily decorated Mabry Concert Hall inside the Music\/Mass Communication Building.<\/p>\n<p>The program will open with the piece \u201cViennese Musical Clock,\u201d which will set the tone for the evening with its strange and haunting sounds. Later, the 21-member percussion ensemble will perform Steinquest\u2019s unique arrangement of composer Bela Bartok\u2019s \u201cWith Drums and Pipes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a piece for solo piano and turned into it a piece for literally pieces of pipe and brake drums off of cars and all different sizes of drums,\u201d Steinquest said.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the ensemble known as the King of Pop Horns and two APSU faculty members will play along in a performance of Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cThriller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing is, I love using other people on this concert,\u201d Steinquest said. \u201cStanley Yates, our great classical guitar player, is going to play electric guitar on \u2018Thriller.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Korre Foster, director of APSU choral activities, will recite the song\u2019s spoken word dialogue, which was originally performed by horror movie legend Vincent Price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be great because Korre has an extremely low, resonant voice,\u201d Steinquest said.<\/p>\n<p>The concert will also feature Brian Vernon, chair of the APSU Department of Theater and Dance, tap dancing to William Bolcom\u2019s \u201cGraceful Ghost,\u201d and a choral group known as The Ambien Singers performing Eric Whitacre\u2019s \u201cSleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful piece of music, and we\u2019re using a large choir of 50 or so voices,\u201d Steinquest said. \u201cThat\u2019s going to have this huge, beautiful, rich sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The evening will end featuring the ensemble Weapons of Brass Destruction on Gustav Holst\u2019s \u201cMars, the Bringer of War\u201d \u2013 a popular classical piece often used in movies and commercials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very recognizable, and it\u2019s going to be so much fun to have the sound of Weapons of Brass Destruction combined with ours,\u201d Steinquest said. \u201cI hate the word awesome, but it\u2019s going to be such an awesome sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the Halloween concert is two cans of food, which will be donated to Loaves and Fishes, or $3.00.
