Critics and readers, however, were quick to notice his talent, placing him among such luminaries as William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>Gay has been described as a master of the \u201csouthern gothic\u201d novel with his stories focusing on rural characters and locales, and he\u2019s earned numerous accolades to accompany this praise.<\/p>\n<p>He was awarded the 1999 William Peden Award, the 2000 James A. Michener Memorial Prize, a 2002 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2007 Ford Foundation U.S. Artist grant.<\/p>\n<p>Gay is the author of three novels, \u201cThe Long Home,\u201d \u201cProvinces of Night\u201d and \u201cTwilight,\u201d and the short story collections, \u201cI Hate to See that Evening Sun Go Down\u201d and \u201cWittgenstein\u2019s Lolita.\u201d A fourth novel, \u201cThe Lost Country,\u201d is due out sometime this year. His short stories have also appeared in numerous magazines, such as Harper\u2019s, Atlantic Monthly, GQ and New Stories from the South 1999 and 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Gay will read from his work at 7:00 p.m., July 14 in Room 303 of the APSU Morgan University Center. This reading is free and open to the public.
