{"id":14751,"date":"2013-04-19T12:00:48","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T17:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=14751"},"modified":"2013-04-19T05:09:28","modified_gmt":"2013-04-19T10:09:28","slug":"austin-peay-state-university-wind-ensemble-to-perform-coplands-lincoln-portrait-april-25th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2013\/04\/19\/austin-peay-state-university-wind-ensemble-to-perform-coplands-lincoln-portrait-april-25th\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay State University Wind Ensemble to perform Copland&#8217;s &#8220;Lincoln Portrait&#8221; April 25th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-95649 alignleft\" title=\"APSU Department of Music\" alt=\"APSU Department of Music\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/APSU-Department-of-Music.gif\" width=\"225\" height=\"95\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; In the early days of World War II, the American composer Aaron Copland wrote a patriotic orchestral work to lift the spirits of a gloomy nation.<\/p>\n<p>He needed a symbol of freedom to inspire a generation of Americans as they prepared for war, and he soon found what he needed in the words of a former president \u2013 Abraham Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>In 1942, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra premiered Copland\u2019s \u201cLincoln Portrait.\u201d<!--more-->The work sampled from popular American folk songs while also featuring a narrator reading from Lincoln\u2019s speeches and letters. At 7:30pm on April 25th, the Austin Peay State University Wind Ensemble will perform this powerful work during a free concert in the APSU Mabry Concert Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Gregory Wolynec, APSU professor of music, will conduct the student ensemble, and APSU President Tim Hall will serve as the program\u2019s narrator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very exciting for us,\u201d Wolynec said. \u201cThe narration text is from some of Lincoln\u2019s most famous speeches. And we\u2019re closing with an excerpt from the Gettysburg Address. It\u2019s very powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before performing \u201cLincoln Portrait,\u201d the ensemble will premier a new piano concerto written by Dr. Jeffrey Wood, APSU professor of music. Wood will be the piano soloist on that piece.<\/p>\n<p>The evening\u2019s program will also include a collection of classic works for wind percussion, including composer Paul Hindemith\u2019s \u201cMarch to the Symphonic Metamorphosis,\u201d a chamber work by Venezuelan composer Renaldo Hahn and English composer Gustav Holst\u2019s \u201cSecond Suite for Military Band.\u201d APSU graduate student Vanessa Cobb will conduct the ensemble during the Holst work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very colorful program,\u201d Wolynec said.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on this concert, contact the APSU Department of Music at 931.221.7818.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; In the early days of World War II, the American composer Aaron Copland wrote a patriotic orchestral work to lift the spirits of a gloomy nation.
